Just wondering if anyone has sent their Vanguard to Weatherby for the Bolt Sleeve recall?
I received a link to the recall notice from a fellow CGN member (thanks drift1122) and sure enough one of mine was listed. Note: this is an old recall notice just thought I would resurrect it for those that aren't aware.

I filled out the registration form and Weatherby replied saying they would send out a "Bolt Kit" to mail the bolt for the warranty work. I also emailed Elwood Epps asking if they will do the work or if it goes across the border. Hopefully I'll hear back in the next couple of days.

I'm not interested in hearing who thinks what make is best and which aren't, just any info from someone that's already done this. Also, to inform anyone that owns a Vanguard manufactured between 1970 and 1993 that they should check the serial number.

The recall notice indicates the firing pin can release from the sleeve (shroud) and strike the primer while the bolt is being closed but not yet locked.
 
Yup, call Weatherby's # with the serial number to confirm that your gun is indeed on the recall list.
They will tell you to send it to Elwood Epps for the update.
It gets done and Epps will send it back.
I took photos of my rifle with serial number, the bolt with serial number and the postage
receipt with amount along with the post office receipt.
Stamp amount is less than the receipt.............taxes added to receipt.
Weatherby will eventually send you a check for the freight costs by you.........( in U.S. of A. funds)
 
I did send a Mossberg bolt back to the Howa rep in the US a few years ago. I was surprised at how easy it was, and quick. I think I had it back in less than a month.
 
I'm thinking it's for the older generation Vanguards.
There is a web page with the serial numbers affected by the recall.
Go have a snewpie.
 
The older ones didn't have the words , "on," and "off," on the sleeve, to indicate which way to slide the safety lever.
The work done is painting "on," and "off," in the proper place on the bolt, to indicate if the safety is on or off.
Not really high tech, but it shows how much liability means with anything involving gun safety.
Looky, you send in a picture showing the nice, brightly painted letters.
 
Had my S1 done by Epp's a few monyhs ago.The wife dropped it off and it was back to me in about three weeks.
I think there was more involved then just painting S and F on the shroud.There was supposed to have been an issue with the rifle discharging with out pulling the trigger,though I never has that occur.
 
I came across this recall about 5 or 6 years ago, and my Vanguard's serial number qualified. At the time the bolt sleeve had come loose to the point that it rattled, annoyingly so.

It was about two months before season opened, and I figured I'd be darn lucky to have my rifle back together again any time soon...especially considering I'm on the Canadian side of the border.

I contacted Weatherby as per instructions. Inside of a week I got their packaging in the mail by which to return the bolt. With a prayer, I sent it off.

Two weeks later I had the bolt show up in the mail, repaired with a new sleeve (that didn't rattle!) and ready to go!

I was so impressed with Weatherby's service that I phoned to thank them profusely! Top notch!!!

And no problems ever since.

Weatherby, Inc. of Paso Robles, California, is performing a safety upgrade on all Vanguard® by Weatherby brand rifles manufactured between the years 1970 to 1993.
The affected rifles bear serial numbers from one of the following series on the receiver: 00001 through 03810; V00001 through V80966; VX00001 through VX44065; VS00001 through VS23699; VL00001 through VL46984; W0001 through W0099; NV0001 through NV0099. The safety upgrade will replace the bolt sleeve to prevent misassembly of the bolt, which might occur on the affected rifles. Such disassembly might result into a hazardous condition in which the rifle can be accidentally discharged without the bolt being fully engaged, causing severe injury.

this recall...would it affect any current models? I just ordered a Vanguard from the WSS sale. it's a gift, so I don't want to send them something that needs repairs out of box. :confused:
