Just purchased a weatherby vanguard s2 in .270 win and a Nikon prostaff 3x9x40 scope. Looking for input on what mounting system to use. Talley makes both one and two piece mounts. Med or low?
Medium rings should do. Talley makes rings for vanguard I would recommend two piece because the long base on receiver is just another spot for rust to start.
I have two different scopes mounted with Talley Low "lightweights" (so the aluminum ring/mount in one) on VGII's.
I hate to post photobucket links because they suck but here is a couple close up pics. The Sporter (wood stock) has a Burris 3-9X40 E1 mounted and the Synthetic has a 3-9X42 Redfield mounted. The Redfield "just" clears the barrel with a scope cap on.
The problem you may tend to run into is with 90 degree bolts (such as on the VGII) and the bell on some scopes if it's "large". You should be fine with Prostaff and low Talley's.
I have a Burris Veracity 2.5-10X42 mounted on another (sorry no pic) that needed high rings for exactly the reason I noted above. Good barrel clearance but the bolt would smack the ocular bell with low or medium mounts.
