weatherby vanguard s2 price?

Off the top of my head, I'm going to say that it's because you're looking at different guns. There are plenty of new S2's around for less than 600 before taxes. If you start to look at stainless, or "Range Certified", or Backcountry models, you will see prices up to and well above $1000.

I know. I have a blued 308. Everywhere I look the same one is over 900.
Maybe im wrong, but im sure of it

Yep, you're wrong. I'm sure of it. :)

JK. I was looking around at the Backcountry model just a few days ago. Bought something else instead, but while still shopping for the Backcountry I was seeing standard blued models all over the place for a low of $572 and a high around $625. Just checked Epps site a few seconds ago...same thing. The price you paid, if before taxes, seems to be at the high end of the basic model. They are around, and in good numbers, for less. While in Cabela's I handled one of the basic ones and compared it to the Backcountry model. Big difference in price, but it seemed reasonable given the improved stock and metal finish. IMHO any version of the Vanguard offers excellent value for money.

Due to the Canadian Dollar taking a dive, plus Weatherby adding a small increase in the cost from them the wholesale cost of a Vanguard II has gone up 25.9% since early December.

So when my new Wby's come in and I put them in the showcase "my store" is not going to eat that increase.

But 950 bucks sounds "excessive" unless you are talking about a wood stocked "sporter" model VGII - the synthetic's should list in the mid/high 700 buck range unless the dollar keeps going south.

Yeah cabelas is still low. Can am has the exact same rifle as mine with no scope for 950
And some other places to, I just cant remember where I looked but can am for sure

And this would be the perfect starting rifle, rather than the Axle or 'Merikan.

Absolutely! It's hard to believe they sell any "Axles", "'Merikans", 783's, 770's, SPS's, or other "budget" bolt guns when that deal is (or was) available. A shame about the price increase, though...nothing good ever lasts.

Honestly this is an awesome rifle. Starter or whatever. I knows guys with sako, tikka you name it
This shoots just as nice and looks good to. Very nice action not a sloopy bolt. I think ill own this gun
Forever. Its think its very accurate

Can anybody recommend a decent scope/mount for ~$300 for this? Thinking of picking this up, but I know nothing about scope/optics. Wondering if I should just buy the Vanguard S2 with redfield scope package/hard case at cabelas for $960 or get this kryptek and a cheaper scope/mount? For use exclusively on the range

The Talley mounts (which is who makes the Wby brand as well) are pretty sweet on this rifle). Otherwise, any mounts that will fit a Rem 700 or Howa 1500 will fit the VGII's.

You can use the low mounts upto about a 44mm objective. I have low mounts on my VGII with a Redfield Revenge 3-9x42mm, with flip up caps and there is just a hair of light visible between the front cap and the barrel.

These mounts are the base/ring all in one and are reasonably priced at 50 bucks for the set (yes a little more than say weaver bases/rings but good solid mounts for a rifle "guaranteed" to shoot MOA.

I picked up the scope from Prophet river (on sale) along with the mounts for just under 300 bucks shipped and find that combo to be "reasonable" on this rifle - I didn't want glass costing as much as the rifle sitting on top and the Redfields, owned by Leupold as their lower cost offering, has been working fine for me.

BUT, I don't shoot into the last seconds of legal light and when hunting I usually don't shoot past 100 yards (never had to at least). I did get the accu-range reticle and have horsed around with it a bit and it does work well out to 400 yards (furthest I could find to shoot), but the reticle is kinda busy (I was going to get the standard reticle but the "fancy one" was on sale).

Personally I wouldn't get the packaged deal - the price is good but the Kryptek is a way cooler looking rifle.

Mine is the (regular) grey with black insert synthetic and I like it just fine, but if the Kryptek had of been available I would have gone with that (at least with a hunting rifle you look at it far more than you shoot it - so "looking cool" counts) :)

Other scopes I considered for the Vanguard II were the Nikon Prostaff and the Busnell Legend (both in 3-9x40) as well as the Redfield Revolution (just a little different than the Revenge series), because I wanted to keep the cost of "mounted" optics at about half the sticker price of the rifle.

If you are looking at keeping the weight down, maybe find the lightest scope you can. The Vanguard II's are "heavy" just by themselves. With my scope/ring setup and the magazine full the rifle tips the scales just a hair shy of 9 full pounds - so not a "lightweight" by any means.

^Thanks! That post was really helpful! I ended up buying the kryptek. I'm looking into the Nikon Prostaff 3-9x40 as cost is a big factor for me. I just don't know which height of the talley mounts would work since I heard the Nikon scope is a bit on the larger size and the vanguard has a 90 degree throw

Give Clay a call at prophet river and he will get you the correct rings.

I have a strong suspicion the medium rings are the ticket.
