Weatherby Vanguard Series 2 sale 43% off

long term plan is to put it in a bell and Carlson or maybe boyd's stock...but definitely paint it for the short term, don't want to be seen with a flamer stock in the bush lol

anybody else free float a vanguard yet? I thought the B&C stocks were free floated

already sanded down the seams and getting ready to paint

the barrel is not free floated, and there is a lot more contact than just fore end pressure, there is contact basically along the entire length of the barrel...I know weatherby says their #2 barrels need upward pressure, but planning to free float and see how it shoots

The factory stocks are very flexible, so free floating may not be very practical with the factory stock. I bedded and free floated an older Vanguard MOA, and it lost accuracy. When I added a pressure point at the original location, it shot better than ever.

maybe I'll just sand the edges and seams and hit it with some krylon for now.....I don't think lightly cleaning up the edges of the barrel channel should affect anything

I'll post the groups after I find time to paint

Well I finally caved and went to the store to buy a .270. It still says limited quantities available at the Saskatoon store online. Well they didn't have any .270's left. :( As of this morning they have a .243 and either two .308's and a 30-06, or one .308 and two 30-06's. I can't remember which it was. So if you're in the area and you're on the fence about it..... better act quick!

.243 arrived.... Stock is even worse in person lol
Quality of the stock reminds me of the old Savage 10/12 rubbery plastic garbage, not worth keeping IMHO.
Will be looking at Boyds for a laminate....

Well I dropped into WSS south in Calgary and the guy at the counter said they have 0 left. I didn't think starting this thread would clear them out this fast.

My .223 arrived today. There is NO WAY this stock will grow on me. Interesting note, the butt already has expanding foam in it to eliminate the hollow tupperware feel. Once painted this will be a glorious bargain. As it is, makes my eyes bleed.

My wife ripped on me tonight when I opened it up.....said "nice gun homo" and gave me a look of disgust. I told her it was her new hunting rifle.... She said no way. Thats how I know it's truly gross lol.
The pattern matches the bottom of the rifle, but not the top seam on the comb. I guess they roll it on a big flat piece of plastic then fold it together over a mold.
Out of all the cheap "budget" type rifles I own, I'd say it's closest in quality to a 700sps, but with a flimsier stock.
Lots of mim small parts, plastic follower, trigger is good, the whole firing pin/spring/cocking piece are held together by the tiniest little roll pin which makes me wonder how durable the assembly is going to be, action is smooth bolt is beefy, stroke is long for a short action, bottom metal is metal at least, but mine has lots of tool marks in and around the trigger guard, safety is a bit clunky and not real smooth.
I'd say it's a $500 rifle, so an ok deal at $399, but not a steal.

My wife did the opposite, (But with far less drama) after I told her that I'm going to give the stock a Krylon coat. She merely said.."Oh, I like the way that looks. Give it a chance to grow on you."

It's been 2 days now and I find that stock growing away from me..quickly. You know it's time fer a makeover when ya start hearin' Village People music in yer head.

shoot!

take a couple days off from the hunting forum and i miss getting a 243!

that will teach me to skip this forum!

would have dearly loved to get one in 243 and replace my Axis that i hate so much i dont even use anymore.

I'd say that the Vanguard is worth about $300 more than a Savage Axis.

Axis is grossly overpriced though for what it is....you can get into a Savage model 10/11 for $550 regular price (no sale) which is more what the Vanguard is like.
I don't think anybody that bought these hoping to flip them for a $$ is going to be too happy lol

The long actions can be converted to mag feed for around $100....

Hey Hitzy,

It appears that buying from Prophet River would work out cheaper, overall.

With tax and shipping (for NS), from PR, the total would be $135ish CDN.................worth it IMO.

I like mine :)

Yeah, the bottom metal isn't that sweet on these so I don't see going to plastic as a big down grade lol
Detachable mags are a big plus for me with hunting. Gotta sort that stock out first...
