Hello all, i am new to hunting and i think i have finally picked my deer rifle. the weatherby vangaurd series 2 stainless .270 i have some questions as i am new to this.. if i buy this rifle how do i know what scope base and stuff to get. i would like something good. for scope i "think" i might go with a bushnell elite 3x9x40. but i am not sure as i am still searching since i have finally picked out the rifle i will buy. any info on this rifle would be great too. main question though is scope base and rings. from what i have seen it has to be somewhat high because of this bolt lever. but i am not to sure that is why i am asking all of you. any info would be great. Thanks!!

or just take the rifle to the shop and let them mount scope on rifle. Mounting should be free if you purchase scope and rings im sure.
should get someone to mount that has done many times if you never done it. then learn afterwards.

I prefer Leupold bases and medium rings for the Vanguard, and that is what I have on my stainless MOA in 7mmremag. I did however mount a 3-9 Bushnell Trophy on a blued Vanguard 2 in 270win for a friend on Sunday. He had Weaver bases and rings, and the installation went quick and easy. One shot at 100 yards, one adjustment, another shot at 100 yards, one very small adjustment, and the next three shots formed a three shot group measuring 5/8" right at 1-1/2" high. This was with the cheap Winchester 130gr factory loads. He had a tight budget, and that is why he went with the Trophy and Weaver mounts.

I suggest using Weaver bases and Med. Burris Signiture Zee rings. The insert in the rings protects the finish of the scope, holds the scope better and no lapping is needed using this set up. I use these on all my rifles and have never had one problem. Another bonus to this set up is you can shim your scope if you need more elevation or windage.

I have the s2 vanguard in stainless 270 with the silver bushnell elite 3-9x40 exactly as you want.
It's exquisite and did very well hunting this year.

I am using the talley one piece base and rings. They are sold under the weatherby vanguard name too. They come in silver. Highly recommended. I can post a picture when I get home for you of what the setup looks like.

I bought it at Cabela's for $649 I think. The "Weatherby Vanguard" (talley) one piece rings and bases were $49 and the Elite (new elite) 3-9x40 was, I think, $249.

That's $950 in total before GST. You can order from Cabelas online if you like.

I have a total of 4 Vanguards, but only 1 of the series 2. All have the same rings. They're great!

The S2 shoots any factory ammo I've given it sub-moa except the E-tips from a good bench rest.

In the field, it's just as good. This white tail doe was taken at 339 yards at a full run.

That's the exit side, I was shooting downward a bit, the bullet broke her neck on the way through. That was a 130gr GMX which did admirably.

The other animals taken with it this year were with the 130gr Accubond which also did an incredible job.

try and briing some life back into this, i am defenatly buying the weatherby vanguard s2 in stainless .270win i am getting a 3-9x50 nikon buckmaster bdc. but i have no clue on what i need for mounting since i have read that the bolt will be close to the scope. i would like to know if anyone has a weatherby vanguard s2 with a 50mm scope. any info would be great asx i will be buying this gun in a couple weeks.

I'm mounting a 3-9X40 AO on a Vanguard right now. If you've never done it yourself, don't. I'm using the Talley one-piece mounts, and need to shim them to get the objective to positively clear the barrel. The bolt handle won't be an issue for you using medium rings- I wouldn't go any higher or you could start having issues with how the stock fits and gives you a cheek weld. That 50mm objective will be your biggest problem. And please, make sure that whomever mounts it for you KNOWS what they're doing- I just finished fixing a rifle for a friend who had Wholesale Sports mount his $1000 tactical scope -twice- incorrectly. Nothing torqued, loc-tited or lapped. He now has rub marks all over the top of his receiver, rings and scope because of the botch job they did. If you can, watch the process as they do it. Make sure they check ring alignment, make sure if you're not using Burris Zee or Optilok rings they lap them at least to make sure they're making 60% contact or better, and make sure they use Loc-Tite and a torque driver to tighten things down! And they should be using some kind of reticle leveler before they do that!

Hi.Love my vanguard.Mine is in 7mm mag.I put a bushnell 3-9x50 3200 elite on it.Shoots sub moa.I use 165gr accubonds.Oh ya leupold bases.Good luck

One more vote for the Talley low rings, I had an elite 3-9x40 on mine and it was a great combo. Only sold it because I got the model 70 I always wanted.

bought a different scope 3-10x44. getting it mounted for at local shop. still dont know what base and rings to use probably just end up with the talley ones.
