Wondering if anyone knows which Leupold bases I'd use for the above gun. It's a 2007 or 2008 model.

In the Leupold catalogue it shows I should go for the Weatherby Mark V bases, and the guy at WSS said the Rem 700 bases fit the vanguards. I've tried both (both almost identical, but better build quality on the Mark V bases), and they fit, but have quite a bit of overhang, and the rear base only fits with the windage screws in the forward position.

Thanks for the help,

I had a Weatherby and the Remington 700 base fit mine no problem. There is a long action and short action version of the one piece so if you had a short action rifle and the long action base, that might explain the "overhang"?

Remington pattern bases work, but there was a time where there were a lot of Vanguards out there with different dimensions on the receiver rings. The key is to slap a straight edge across the bases when they are screwed down. There were some that had a gap of up to 40 thousandths (half of that was more likely) and that would flex the heck out of the scope and use up the adjustment range. Talleys could solve the problem but were just as apt to create it. Weaver bases had a footnote that there bases might require shimming. It wasn't because the bases varied that much, it was because the receivers did. There was a slightly thicker Weaver base that could solve the issue, but I've forgotten the number now. Again, it could only solve the problem if there was one. Otherwise it just created the opposite problem. The key is to check first and the age of your rifle just might put it in the affected group.
I haven't seen any S2s with mounting issues. I prefer the leupold double dovetail on those because it allows me to get the back ring farther ahead and the scope out of my face.

Should be rem 700 bases.A trick I use is place a piece of paper on the top of the receiver and using a pencil color over the area the mt will be then poke out the screw holes so you can take the paper to the store instead of the entire gun.[Portable template]Harold
