Weatherby Vanguard - sub MOA models worth the extra $$ ?

We're past this part in the conversation now, but I bought a stainless Vanguard 257 Wby and have the McMillan "Sako Classic" ordered for it. Seemed a better use of my dollars than buying a MOA model.

In 3 months or so, when the stock gets here, we'll know.

It kills Yotes!

Thanks Rick. :)

Well, I found out yesterday that the Vanguard I bought sure slams Coyotes to the ground!

I'm thinking a 7lb with scope sling and ammo 257 Wtby might be just the ticket....

Now you have me thinking about a lightweight 25wsm,the cartridge that winchester should have introduced. The performance would rival the 257 wby,it would fit a short action, and brass would be super easy to form by just necking down the 270wsm.Might just have to pick up a short action 700,and have one built.:)

Some loading data published on the 257wsm with a 26" barrel.

64.4 grns RL22 Nosler Partition 100 grn @ 3729 fps
65.7 grns RL22 Nosler Partition 100 grn @ 3779 fps
63.2 grns RL22 Nosler AccuBond 110 grn @ 3613 fps
63.2 grns IMR7828 Barnes Triple Shock 100 grn @ 3706 fps
61.0 grns IMR7828 Hornady SST 117 grn @ 3527 fps

sounds like a great plan...there's a stainless Model 7 in 7SAUM on the EE right now...there's your donor..a barrel swap is all it would require....and a McMillan Edge....

I would build it on a short action 700 instead to allow a longer overall cartridge length.I didn't like the short magazine on my model seven in 7mm-08.But it would have a Gaillard barrel and an Edge.

I think I'll look for a McMillan stock for my Weatherby Vanguard...do I just order directly from them, or does someone local deal in them?

I'd go with a stainless Vanguard and order up a MacMillan myself...but I just had my new 26" 257 Wtby at the range on Sunday...now boys and girls this one flat shooting cartridge....I didn't set up the chrony but 69grs of Rel22 under a 110 Accubond should be 3400+.... I was 2-1/2" high at 100 M...1" high at 200M and a whole 4 inches low at 300 meters....

and it's been discussed before but a 24" 257W gives up very little to a 26" tube....Layne Simpson did a write-up on it a few months or a year ago...a couple factory loads were even a bit faster in the 24" Vanguard that the 26" Mark V.

I have some 100gr TSX's here that will get a run thru the barrel.....I'm hoping to see 3600.....I am planning on trying Rel 25 also...if I like it I may have to build one in stainless......my 25-06 is going to feel left out.

If I were starting out and wanted a deer rifle with a flat trajectory that would maybe see coyote duty once in a while I'd look no further than the 257Wtby.....

Rick,

Let me know where you end up with the RL25. I'm using a published max load of that with a 100 grain Partition and getting 3650 fps from the 24" Vanguard tube. It's not quite giving me the accuracy I want -- about 1.5 MOA out to 300 yards. But it's sure flat shooting -- 3" high at 100 yards and 1" low at 300. If I could just get it to stay under 1 MOA, I'd be a happy man...

Jeff,

Not to take business away from Corlane, but I went a different way. Rick Bin on 24hourcampfire has his Christmas special on for McMillans. You can get them through him for $400 US, then get Guntech to bed it for you. You will probably save in the neighborhood of $150.

Get the regular 6xx$ Vanguard, then replace and bed the stock when and if you see fit.

I own 5 Weatherby Vanguards at present.

3 are S1 [non-moa) and two are S2 [guaranteed .99 moa or better with quality ammo]

My 270 is an S1....shoots lights out! 5/8" is not uncommon at 100. FWIW it shoots noth the 130 & 140 AB's very well. [it's in a Walnut Stock]
My 30-06 is an S2 with a Walnut stock. Sub moa is achieved with several loads, 165 and 180 grain.
My 300 Short Mag is just like the 30-06 [It is an S1 with a Walnut stock]
My 300 Win Mag is averaging about 1-1/8 moa right now, but have only started load development. [S1 with an S2 synthetic stock]
My 338, an S2 with a synthetic stock, is shooting sub moa with two bullets and averaging around 1½ moa with over 7 different bullets/loads.

What is not to like?? These are "sleepers" for sure, and I do not think it matters which model you have.

Regards, Eagleye.
