Weatherby Vanguard...worth the $?

definately buy one they are Howa's and they are great rifles. I have been shooting the Smith and Wesson 1500 for years they are the same thing. It is in 7mmrm and I bought it used 8 years ago and have fired over 800 rounds and it is just as accurate as when I bought it. It had only been fired 4 times.
I have only experience with 2 of these rifles but they seem to be a pretty good gun for the price. My father has a Smith & Wesson 1500 in 30-06 and it is a decent rifle with fit and finish a bit above average. My varminting partner recently bought a Vanguard in 22-250 and he really likes it. He had a Rem 700 heavy varmint rig and wanted a lighter gun for hunting coyotes and picked a Vanguard. I know he did a lot of research before buying and he figured it was the best buy in a budget rifle.
i personally love the look of the deluxe stocks on weatherby's and i think i will get one in .300 weatherby mag eventully for big game....i hear there not quite as accurate a a good 700 or a tikka but planety good for hunting and they are a beautiful rifle

The Vanguards sell for $500 and are a great deal for the average hunter. The triggers arent great but they will work fine in a hunting situation.
Guys who are worried about great triggers and shooting bench rest groups arent going to be buying a rifle in the "econmony class"
2 years ago I hunted exclusively with a Vanguard 270 wsm and killed my biggest Muledeer, a great whitetail and numerous does. They're a good rifle that gets the job done.

ive packed my blued 338 vangard all over the yukon and norther bc as a back up gun. its a little worn and the trigger needs an up grade but i would trust a savage up there. mine shoots 1'' but every thing goes under the weatherby 1.5'' standard.

I personally do not care for the Synthetic stock on the Vanguard, but the Laminate stock is fine. I have a 300 WSM in the Laminate stock, and it is a very accurate rifle. As some have already said, the trigger leaves a bit to be desired, but that is easily addressed if you need a better one. Buy it, you cannot go wrong. Regards, Eagleye
Being this is your first rifle you probably dont have anything to compare a "usable trigger" to a "great trigger" You may have a good trigger on that Vanguard, go out and shoot it for a while you'll be fine.
Its a never ending cycle...first the trigger then you need a new stock, cause everyone has a "McMillan" then a custom barrell.. then a $2500 scope. Just be happy with your first rifle as it is
After that comes the custom jobbies Just try the factory trigger for now, then after you decide to shrink your groups you can get a Timney or Rifle Basix, (perhaps others). A good trigger is a part of increasing your accuracy along with tailored hand loads and lots of practice.
The factory trigger will probably be fine for off hand and typical hunting shots, even if it is really bad, if you are mechnically inclined, a bit of time with a file and whetstone can improve it a lot. When you start shooting from bags and a rest is when you will want a light trigger.
I have a Savage with the AccuTrigger and I enjoyed it for several years but I replaced it recently, just another step in the pursuit of greater accuracy.
