I'm thinking of getting one of these. I was wondering if anyone owns or has owned one of these rifles. What do/did you think of it? Any input would be appreciated. Thanks.

Dave.

l purchased a Blued Vanguard in 300 Weatherby this summer, topped off with a Bushnell Elite 3200 3x9x40. After laser sighting, l went to the range. After a
few shots l got mine down to .464 in, at 200 yrds. with a good bench rest of course. Love the feel and fit, it performes and functions very well. l would
recommed this rifle to anyone.

triton,

For 2006 they have really expanded the vanguard lineup....But the Van Syn. for 499-525 is probably the way to go with accuracy anywheres from 1 inch to 1.5 (max guaranteed) they pulled all the sub moa rifles, put on different stocks and bumped the price to 850 + -

I've seen a few 'standard' Vanguard test targets that were easily under an inch so the ones that they are selling as "sub-moa" must shoot even better,

They also use a better stock in the "Sub-moa" vers. It's the same exterior demensions but isn't the cheaper injection molded version, and is pillar bedded.

I wonder why they only used 24" barrels instead of the usual 26" on their magnums? I wish they'd done one in 340 whby instead of 338 win. I guess they figured anyone cheaping out on their bottom of the line rifle isn't going to want to be paying for the 340 wby ammo. They are a nicely finished rifle for the price.

I wouldn't lose any sleep over it! :D

I have owned five Howa/Vanguard/Mossberg/Smith&Wesson rifles over the years, in calibers from 223 Rem to 338 Win, and every one of them would shoot substantially under an inch.

The 243 I have shoots very close to half an inch with just about any load you put into it.

The only deal better than the Vanguard right now is the Stevens 200. You might want to check them out, too.

I have owned 3 Vangaurds a 243,30-06 and this fall I bought a 223 Stainless. All will shoot under and inch. The triggers are adjustable down to about 3 lbs.

I have owned two in 308 win and both where great rifles. Accurate and smooth feeding. I have nothing bad to say about them.

I'd like one in .257 wmag but the ammo is a little steep. Does anyone know if anyone other than weatherby loads it?

Dave.

Just buy the dies and brass Dave.....I did for my 300 wtby...no more $$ than any other reloading components...they are good rifles for the price, both of mine shoot great...stock is something to be desired for my liking, but it's good enuff for what I do

$80 and taxes for Winchester ammo in town here, for that price I can pick up dies and brass and bullets

How does the .257 perform out of a 24" tube? I've only used them with 26" barrels, and the amount of powder they go through you'd figure they need the extra barrel length.

Its a Howa... the Stevens 200 is getting good reviews too.
Well, the action is made by Howa, but the barrels & stocks are different and the Weatherbys have a bit more care and polish taken with them.
They may come from the same factory but they're different beasts.
Believe me, a friend spoke with a Weatherby rep at length about it.
And while I don't own one I have shot another friend's Vanguard Deluxe(wood/blued) in .243 and using Remington standard factory ammo it printed 3 pills into one ragged hole at 50yds off the bench.
Who knows?
It may open up from there but I was convinced, and I don't even like .243 as a rule.
Personally anyone who'd like to buy me a blued/tan Fiberguard in 270WSM will make me a VERY happy man.:D
Y'know, what gets me is that I hear tales of woe about Howas and about Vanguards and even Savages.
But I see and hear of plenty of guys who successfully hunt with budget rifles.
A mate hunts with a guy who uses his Howa 300 Win Mag for sambar deer.
Everyone says it's a "cheap gun", like they're picking up a pair of soiled underwear, but the guy still has the highest tally and the best racks so who's laughing at the end of the day?
And what is more I hear MANY and much more vehement condemnations of Remingtons.
Do Remington guarantee 1.5"@100yds accuracy out of the box with premium ammo for the SPS?
Does Savage on the Stevens 200?
The Vanguards do and I believe Howa is as well.
That's something to think about.

I have a Vanguard in 270 WSM. I LOVE IT!!!!. With factory ammo on a -20 c day( I was shiverig) I was able to get 1.25" groupings. I am currently working on some reloads to see if I can better it. I prefered them over the Stevens and Savage, and Tika for fit( for me). U will b very happy with it
