Any thoughts on the Weatherby Vanguards? I am looking for a .22-250, and the Vanguards seem pretty affordable. Only problem is I don't know anyone with one. Thoughts?
Thanks.

A Vanguard is made by Howa, in Japan. It has styling features reminiscent of Weatherby's Mk. V. The same basic rifle has been sold over the years as a Howa, Mossberg, Smith & Wesson. They are not dissimilar to an AII Sako in some respects. Decent rifles. Well made, good shooters.

This is nice to see, since I held one just the other day. Not sure if I need to get a 22-250 yet or not, but the price seemed pretty good for a Weatherby. Only $200 difference from a Savage. Just need to actually find some yotes to shoot to justify buying one for next year.

My gunsmith was impressed with the action. Only drawback is if you ever rebarrel the threads are metric.

That's not drawback whatsoever, most lathes (mine to) can cut metric threads with no problem. All electronic verniers are convertible to milimeters too. If somebody doesn't have metric micrometers then measurements in imperial ones can be converted with the help of conversion tables or calculators. Big deal....

I got the vanguard in a 22 250 this fall for the price you can't beat it I have shot coyotes and rabbits like crazy and it has not missed a beat

I have one in .243 win. I think it is an overall great rifle, built well, shoots well. Does what I need it to. I have a Burris 4.5-14x42 with ballistic plex and it will shoot straighter than I can hold it most days.

Well as usual a day late and a dollar short, but I really like my .257 Wby Vanguard as well.
I bought it for $550.00 all in a four years ago now and it too does what I ask of it and it can do better than I .
I think it is very good value for the dollar that it is priced to compete against.
Then again others will have something more to compare against.
Tight Groups,
Rob

I've only got one, a .300 Weatherby that I restocked with a Boyds Laminated JRS stock and put a Timney trigger on. There's some rifles that cost 3 -4 times as much that could learn a thing or 2 about feeding from a $500 Vanguard. I keep trying to think of reasons to buy more.

I haven't been out to shoot mine much as of yet, but from what I have, it seems to be a good rifle for the cost. Seems well built, shoulders very easily, trigger is crisp, and I'm getting 3/4" groups right out of the box with cheapo 80gr... (.243 btw) I'm positive I'll tighten that up with a little load testing. For $499, I wouldn't hesitate to recommend it to a friend.

I've had one in .300Win and now have a MOA in .22-250, and am very satisfied with the accuracy. I'm not crazy about the Monte Carlo stock styling but find it very comfortable to handle and shoot. Some owners claim they have good triggers on theirs...I don't like the trigger, and adjusting it down to a comfortable weight and let-off (done by gunsmith) affected operation of the safety. I will be changing the trigger, but aside from that one item I have no reservations about these guns.

Good gunsmith set up the trigger on my Vanguard, nice and crisp at about 3 lbs. Can't think of a good reason to replace it.

Mine originally had a wood stock with the pressure point at the tip of the forearm built in. On a good day it would group about 3".

Replaced the stock with a synthetic that included free floating barrel.

First group for sight in measured 5/8".

I could have just hollowed out pressure point on the original for basically same effect, but I wanted the tougher weather and humidity resistance of the synth.

My 257wby shoots like a laser. Started having some rust issues on the barrel were it was handled but I guess that is par for the course. Slap on more oil for storage.

Have one in 30-06 with the rubber covered tan/black spiderweb stock, shoots unbelievably well. That being said I like the trigger on my Tikka and Sako better, but still a very good shooter. I also wish it was not a 90 degree bolt lift but for the price still nice.
