Bass Pro in Toronto is having a sale on the Weatherby Vanguard for under $500. It sounds like a great price for a rifle, but I am thinking "you get what you pay for". Anyone have any experience with these rifles? Are they a good bang for the buck??

There has been a lot of discussion on these rifles. If the gun is the older model the price you state is not all that great but is fair. The older models were selling quite cheap a few months ago as the big stores were moving old stock. If the rifle is the new S2 version then under $500 is a great price.

Vanguards are a solid well built and accurate rifle. Not too many complaints but some one will always have something to say. I've owned two and have no issues.

I currently have an S2 model in 7 08 and I wont be selling this one any time soon. It took a little playing around with loads but it shoots .75" with no problems now. It is solid feeling in the hands and does not have that cheap feel that other brands in this price range do. Also, the trigger of the new S2 is much better than the older model.

I had three of the older vanguards. Excellent rifles. I was not a huge fan of that grey plastic stock, but it grows on you. I sold one and have the other in a 308 carbine. I bubba'd the stock (shortened it) so i could have a free floating barrel. What an excellent rifle.

I bought an S2 the other day in 30-06. Walnut stock...$630.

Working loads for it now. With Nosler 165 partitions, it is shooting about 1" MOA. With Nosler 165 Ballistic tips it is a hair larger than .75". Can't complain about that.

That is a beautiful 30-06 rifle at a good price and it sound real accurate. I would go early to the sale at Bass Pro because they have a habit of only stocking a couple of rifles. You pretty much have to be first through the door and run to the gun counter to get one.

I've been giving a lot of consideration to the S2 version. General consensus from the hunting community is that they are a fantastic rifle for the price. I also believe they use the Howa action. Supposedly a very accurate and reliable rifle.

I have a Vanguard in 22-250 that I really like. The bolt and trigger on mine are very nice and it shoots real good to. I didn't care for the black plastic stock so I Boyd's thumbhole stock on it. I'm very pleased with it and plan to eventually get one in 30-06.

Did the change to the Boyds have any impact on accuracy or POI ?
Did you glass bed the action or just bolt it on ?

I have an old vanguard in 257 wby and I love it accuracy is awsome and the trigger is better then I could have ever asked for nice and crisp with 0 creep. IMO the vanguard is probley the best "bang for your dollar" budget rifle out there!

I bought a sporter in .243 in Jan. Awesome trigger, nice action and nice stock for a gun of that price. It wAs much nicer than I expected. Easily shoots Sub moa with handloads.

I haven't bedded the action but I am thinking about doing it. I also haven't shot the rifle yet with this new stock. I'm hoping to test one weekend soon. I will let you know how it shoots when I do.

The only negative with the S2 is the new synthetic stock isn't as nice as the S1, IMO. Otherwise its a nice rifle. I almost bought a 223 sporter but I don't want the 1:12 twist.

I bought the old style Weatherby with a clip in 270 and put a thumbhole Boyds stock, other than being a little heavy its the best value I have found for the money.

Grew up in a weatherby household and every one we've had has a been a moa or better shooter from the 300wby down to the 223. The performance you get for the price is amazing and I don't recall seeing on any other manufacturers websites an accuracy guarantee with a measurement attached. My older vanguard in 270 with win xp3 150gr will shoot into one ragged hole at 100 untill the barrel gets hot and even then its still moa capable.
