Got had my hands on an older Italian made 22 and hoping to find some info for its owner. I found two previous threads but they did not help much. The owner is tempted to sell after he saw the range of pricing on a few US sites.

Definitely stamped "Made in Italy" and "Patent Pending". The serial number is only a five digit number but without a double letter prefix. Five round, detachable magazine, not the tube. The blueing and metal is mostly excellent, unfortunately some wear at the muzzle but the rest of the metal and bluing is pristine. The stock is the deluxe version with rosewood accents and inlays, which I suspect means a later production, it has a few rub marks but no gouges or cracks. The original factory, 4X scope and the original box is long gone.

The lack of lettering prefix on the serial and the Patent Pending cause me to suspect this is an early production (1961-1962) but the deluxe stock seems like something from a later production.

Can't post pics but I can send them to a cell or email address.

If memory serves me correctly, that gun was manufactured by Beretta for Weatherby. You should be able to find out o the Weatherby site. They list all manufacturers so that should help narrow it down. They were the nicest produced in my eyes.

If I remember correctly they were made in Italy, USA and Japan. Fun fact the mags aren’t all interchangeable. The serial # will match to the country

45CAT is correct in the mfg. Italian (Beretta) Japan (KTG,Nikko,Howa) USA was Mossberg. Apparently not many were produced by mossberg and they are very rare. Beautiful gun

As noted by others, the semi-auto Weatherby XXII was originally made by Beretta and later manufactured in Japan (1967 - 1980, 1984 - 1988) and the USA by Mossberg (1979 - 1982). About 100,000 were produced in total, some with a detachable box magazine, some with a tube magazine. The box magazine for the bolt action Weatherby XXII, which had an Anschutz 64 barreled action, is not interchangeable with the semi-auto Weatherby XXII.

For date of manufacture by serial number, see https://faq.weatherby.com/when-was-my-mark-xxii-produced

For a few more details in general about the semi-auto XXII, see https://www.shootingtimes.com/editorial/weatherby-mark-xxii-rifle-review/376738

Saw this website but like I mentioned in the initial post, the serial does not have the prefix letters so the chart gives no bearing on a manufacturing date.
