Weaver bases?

Bought a Wheeler Wheeler Wheeler scope mounting kit on sale during the holiday season.
Figured I'd try it out to see what all the nonsense was about.
Wanted to jiggle a few scopes around and put my VXII on this S2 I purchased.
Hence me t'uther tread.......:redface:
Took the VXII of the T-bolt, but before I did that, I set up my bore sight to said rifle.
The first part is to level the rifle in it's stand.
I used the rear Weaver base for this platform with the WWW level.
For chits and giggles I moved the level to the front Weaver base.
It is krickkridd or off level.
Tried it a few more times and the two bases aren't in sync as far as level goes.

Soooooo, what does one do.............the dance?
Like take one off and spin it around?
Interesting as one base is stamped with the # for identification.
I checked the other for a stamp # so I could maybe index the numbers on the
same side...........no #.

Heck, I bawt some cauliflowers to go shoot ................. :eek:
 
I have been working over some older rifles and have run into that several times. I take the action out of the stock and get the action levelled left to right first (easy with Model 70 Win or Mauser - use the flat base of receiver. I have no experience with an S2 - if it doesn't have a flat bottom, then maybe the bolt rails? Anyway, get the action level first, then use the same tool to check which of the bases is truly level to the receiver, and shim accordingly. A bit of epoxy with release on the base can make the "shim" permanent.
FWIW, my experience with those tools is that I could not get the same reading, at the same place, with any of the three levels. On the set I tried, all three would read differently when sitting side by each on a carpenters level. Nowadays, I just use the little level in the handle of a sliding square - apparently the trick is to keep the level vial oriented the same way (don't swap ends), and get your reference, and both bases all placing the bubble in the same spot. Gets to be real fun when I discovered that sometimes they are not parallel to the bore - one base higher than the other. (Find that mostly on masers that have the receiver ground - some "not-to-great" jobs done that look shiny or nicely blued, but not in line...
