Weaver K4 problems

I bought a very old, but never used Weaver K4 from e-bay.

When I went to unscrew the adjustment caps, the entire mechanism unscrewed, so I was looking into the scope. Apparently some sort of rubber cement used to seal it had dried out, and I brushed that out.

I was able to re-assemble it by screwing the adjustment dial mechanism back into the scope body tightly, and then screwing the cover on loosely.

Can I trust this scope? Should I bother sighting it in, or give up now and get a different one? If it matters, it is on a 6.5 Swede

I don't know if you can trust it. No one can know for sure without trying it. Yes, you should bother sighting it in. You could try Loctite on the threads for the adjustment dial mechanism. It would probably seal it effectively.

My thought on sighting it in or not was that it would be a waste of ammo to sight it in only to find it lost it's zero or fogged the first time I took it hunting.

Where is Tracer Scope Repair? I am in Manitoba. Does anyone know of a place here that could do the repair?

Well - If I were you, I'd try to ascertain if the scope still adjusts properly. As BB stated, there likely no nitrogen purge to be lost... If it still adjusts, away you go..
If the scope isnt functional, I'm not sure a repair is warranted - you can pick up a used one in excellent shape for 50$.

As the scope was new in box, I have the package.

It claims:

Tough rubber gaskets and o-rings, and also that it is nitrogen filled.

Omark Industries of WI, the package was designed around 1988, says it was made in USA, aluminum main tube. The number under k4 is 49934.

I'll give the repair guy a call and perhaps he can tell me if it is worth it. For about 200, I can get a new one of these. And with the price of ammo and such it isn't worth it to me to have an unreliable scope.

What next, then?

So, "not a real K4". What does that mean exactly? Not deserving of the El Paso reputation, I suppose.

Does it mean it isn't a usable scope? Is it now not worth sending away?

I just spoke with Trace Scope repair, and apparently my scope was only made for a short time, and he's not sure by whom. I'm sending it in, and will update this thread when I know more.
