Weaver K6 for 375 hunting rig?

Vortex Viper?

I just ordered a Vortex Viper 2-7X32 for my 375 Ruger. Anyone here used one? They are supposed to be optically superior to the VX II line and quite a bit less money. Eye relief is virtually identical at max power and slightly less at min power. Unlimited transferable lifetime warranty. I figure if it doesn't do the trick on the 375 it'll be moved down to a 30-06 and I'll get another Leupold for the 375.

Hey SuperCub,

Yeah a 2x7 would work just as well. I really could go either way. My biggest thing is that when it comes to the 375 CT is that she only wears a scope is when I am hunting deer/elk, or testing a zero. The rest of the time she gets carried with iron sights and the heavy 300 grain bullets.

So the "low powers" would pretty much never be used, as I tend to be the sort that is very deliberate in my shooting. I always "lose" game while I wait for the perfect heart-lung broadside shot. At the same time, it still is a 375, so I won't be taking any shots out past 300 yards I don't think. So my thoughts were that a 6x gives me everything I need.

But again, either would work fine. Just depends on how much $$$ I have at the time.

My vote always goes to Leupold V-X III 1.5 X 5 for heavy recoil rifles, great eye relief and takes a beating.

Find a used 3X Leupold on Flea-Bay and it will take anything your gun can dish and more.Personally I wouldn't put a variable on a DGR..........OMO ........Harold * I bought a 6X Leupold at a garage sale some idiot had twisted both turret knobs till they stripped for $45.Sent it to leupold and had it back to my door totally reconditioned in two weeks time.No charge.Need I say more...............

Why a fixed 6x for a 375? Wouldn't a 2x7 or similar be more versatile for the type of shooting that you might encounter with that rifle?

.

Not my personal choice, but I have seen it used enough to know it works very well in the right hands.

The fixed 6X36 and 6X42 seem to be about as reliable as a hammer....While the 1.5-5X is a reliable scope I have sent a couple of (very well used) ones in for servicing ...Both were for adjustment (turret) failures.

My buddy runs 6x Leupolds on his 375 and 416....Huge eye relief is the main reason. He is also very competent up close with this scope....It shouldn't work but with some practice it certainly does.

A long time love affair with big bores has awarded me permanent scars from shots taken from awkward field positions. 4 inches of eye relief would have saved most of the "beauty spots"!

Again, when I'm guiding/chasing dangerous game, I use open sights. That's why I bought decent irons and had them installed. I prefer them to low-power scope in such situations.

I would be using a scope when I'm hunting deer and such. I like having the option of taking 350 yard shots, and a 3x or such makes that a little tougher.

And before I get jumped on, yes, I know a lot of people here can take 300m+ shots with a 3x. I did it in the army. It isn't MY preference though. And yes, I don't deny a low power variable works great either. But my own hunting experience has dictated that I do tend to use the higher powers more than the low, considering the type of hunting/shot selection I do/choose.

I've got a 3.5-10 VX111 on one .375 and a 3-9 Diavari on another. Since I view a .375 as a general purpose hunting rifle I use general purpose scopes. Having said that, the FX111 6 X 42mm is so freakishly easy to get along with that I could just as easily use that and never look back. The eyebox is huge.
