Whats the big deal about Weaver rings? How do they stack up against, say, Ruger rings supplied with rifles? Aside from the tipoffs what makes them so special? Went looking for Weaver scopes and only found a site for rings. Are they that much better? Why? Your thoughts/opinions would be appreciated.

Weaver rings have a couple maddening traits, besides being ugly. First off they tend to rotate the scope as they are tightened so the crosshairs end up crooked. This leaves you starting again with them crooked the other way in the hopes that they achieve square and tight at the same point. They also tend to pinch the scope tube on the screw side of the rings. Did I mention that they are ugly? There are plenty of better ring options that fit the same bases.

The Weaver ring is THE original QD ring. It is tough, and dependable, but is plagued with the above mentioned attributes.

The trouble with them is that they probably were designed for use on the old all steel Weaver scope.

The Weaver system is simple and dependable. Just take note of how pretty much all the other scope mount makers have copied it in one way or another.

Ruger rings are fine, especially if you already have them. Yes there are better rings that are more expensive,but..........the weaver rings are an excellent value. Once you get past their minor issues that have already been mentioned, although I've yet to dent a scope tube with them. They are light, strong, and retain a decent zero if pulled off and put back on plus they are simple to remove. I think most people are just not that fond of the look.
Simply put they work and don't cost much, but hey you can't please everyone.

Ok so then what are the favorites and why? I dont recall seeing a thread that answers this question. What would you buy and why? Not likely to remove scope so quick release not really an issue. Thanks for the input.

Where possible I use leupold style bases mainly for the windage adjustment. If I have to use weaver it will be the standard and not the grandslams as the grandslams while better looking are garbage.

What makes the GSs garbage? I had two extra pair here that were NIB and ended up selling them before I tried them out. They looked to be a very strong and well designed ring to me.
