One is High Short, and the other is High Long. What's the difference?
Should the scope be directly over the barrel/action?

As far as I know the difference between the long and short is the distance between the front and rear ring so as to accomadate different shapes and sizes of scopes. I have the long ones on my old 22, and the distance between the rings is 11.5cm center to center.

The scope must be centered directly over the barrel and level with the rifle or you will have all kinds of problems shooting at varying distances. I had to file a little material off the mount between the rings to get my scope sitting level. It is a turret type scope and was contacting the mount at the base of the turret so it would not sit level. Works excellent now.
Hope this helps.

If you are referring to the 1" detachable side mounts, the long is used on the 94 Winchester. Needed to move the scope far enough foreward. The short would be used on something like a Savage 340.

Well I got a short one on a .22 and it needs the scope moved back about .5"-.75" to let the bolt handle clear the scope. I thought maybe the long version would allow this.
But seeing how my scope is not centered directly over the barrel, it's a moot point now. Centered directly above, my bolt handle would probably clear the scope.

Thought I've found a no gunsmithing way to mount a 1" scope on the little rifle, but I guess not.

Hmm. This sounds a little familiar. I have a couple Cooey 60s and the first one I drilled and tapped myself for a #2 Weaver side mount. The second one was already drilled when I bought it, but when I installed the base and scope the scope was 3/8" right of center:mad: Then I realized that whoever drilled it must have had the rings incorrectly intalled on the base when they lined it up. The correct way is with the rings hooked over the top of the base, and the incorrect way is with the rings held against the outer face of the base by the thumbscrews only. Try it the 'wrong way' and you may find it all works out. Who knows maybe the same guy drilled yours too. If you need I could take some pics and post them.

If its a Cooey 60 or similar don't be afraid to remove the bolt, clamp it in a vise, and bend the bolt handle to a more convenient shape. That may solve your clearance issue.

Thanks for the idea, it's better, but still not centered over the barrel/action.
I think it was D&T at factory, and it's age makes me think that a weaver 3/4"(type N) scope mount would work. But that really would limit my scope selection.
