Webley Mk1 45 Colt ammo question ?

Ive got this Webley Mk1 marked Colt 45 just wondering if someone with experience in the matter could point me out on the right factory ammo to use without destroying the pistol, thanks in advance, cheers

Is the Cylinder long enough to accept 45 Colt? Sounds to me that it would be 455 Colt maybe?

45 Long Colt is quite a bit hotter than 455 Webley. In any case you should not be using factory ammo in a Webley Mk1. They are not as strong as later variants and were designed for black powder.

It most likely is not 45 Colt. If it is and can chamber 45 Colt for the love of God do not put factory 45 Colt in her or you will wreck her. As others said it would be a challenge to get the long 45 Colt cartrige to seat in such a short cylinder. I bet it is 455 Colt which is 455 Webley Mk2. That would make sense and be safe. It also could be tuened down on a lathe and now chambers 45 Automatic Colt Pistol aka 45 ACP on moon clips. The majority of these guns now are chambered like this. If it is again do not shoot factory loading of this but reload to 455 pressures. I load for my antiques and it is easy and far cheaper than factory loadings. Factory box of 455 is $75-$90 vs reloading it for $15.

Looking at your pictures it looks like the cylinder has been shaved for 45ACP (automatic colt pistol) with moon clips. If it has in fact been modified to 45 Colt it would no longer qualify for antique status, although I doubt this is the case.

AS to brass, have you heard of the"45 cowboy special"
Starline makes them, 45 colt size but 45 acp length

OK then if shaved then 45 ACP cases loaded to 455 Webley Mk2 pressures. This is easy if you already reload. Do you reload?

I'm of the opinion that if it primarily used black powder back in the day, it should be loaded with black powder today. You can't go wrong with loading black powder. With proper care your gun will keep shooting for another few centuries.

I don't like black powder. I use Trailboss now with good results in my antiques.
