Well I got another chance to head out today for another walkabout

Day started out late as I hit the snooze button acouple extra times to many. lol But I did make it out. :)

I decided I was going to head for the farmer that called me about his cats getting take out by the local yote population. I pulled up his driveway alittle behind schedule because of laziness and that came to bite me in the azz. As I was walking through the cattle pens I saw 3 coyotes already walking away from the farm. They were only approx 200 out, but this morning the cows were in my way so I just decided to leave em be for this time. I was kind of a lil pissed because 2 of the yotes were a pretty GOOD size too. After they left I checked out the area for a little while but never saw anything stalking around. Heading back to the truck I heard a small pack for yotes doing their howls for the morning. This came from the approximate direction these other guys took off too. Last year I heard a pack howling from around this same location which I suspected that they hung out in and made some sort of den.

Jumped back in the truck and drove down the road alittle ways to the next farm I had permission on. I brought my snow shoes with me today, so I figure I should use em atleast once this year. :p Off for another walkabout. Walk to my spot and saw nothing heard nothing, it was a bust. Im outty

Back in the truck and back to the first farm again. Last week when I was there, my partner and I saw 7 coyotes chewing of a deer (I think it was a deer as there were a few kicking around this location) down around the gravel pit where I made my little shooting range last year. As I drove past I glassed the area to reveal nothing but a few deer. This area aint that far from where I suspect that den is... hmmm do I jump back on the snowshoes again...... Well I came up with an idea of driving to the other side of the valley and hang out for awhile and glass the suspected area out. No more than 5 minutes go by and I saw those first three yotes headin towards that suspected den area. I watch them walk over a hill into some brush. I keep glassing the area waiting for them to come out, but they never do. Put the truck in drive and drive down into the farmyard and get ready for some good humpin in the hills.

After about a ruff 1.5km walk Im getting close to my area I want to be in. With the wind in my face I decide that 200-250yds is close enough. I walk around a little to pack some of the snow down so I have a place to lay down behind my backpack and a place to hang my called in a close tree. I suspect that if I do call anything, they will come from my front or swing to my left side to get my down wind side.

I took a few pic so I misewell show you to set the scene.

My front

I thought the den was just in the low ground to the right of that ridge or behind it.

I was thinking that they were going to come from one of these directions. Boy was I wrong... lol

I fire up the foxpro on low volume so incase they were close I wouldnt scare em away. I start with a female howl. Not more then 10-12 seconds into the calling I almost sheet me pants because no less then 4 coyotes start going crazy and loud as hell like they were right beside me... lol I guess I miss judged the bush that they were in. They were less then 100yds to my right side in the bush I was hidding by. lol I was fumbling around as I was trying to mute the caller. At one point I was thinking of bolting out of there because I know there is 2 fair sized coyotes here and I now know they are frickin pissed that I walked right into their house. Laugh all you want. :p I had 4 rounds ready to rock, but I have a stevens with a blind mag and I hope I dont have to reload in a hurry. I sat for a few seconds and they started to cool down alittle bit, but I was thinking that they were going to pop out in front of me like 20 feet. After Im guessing 30 seconds pass I look to my right side and I see one coyote pop out the the bush just past the fence line. This guy was looking around for a fight Im sure of it. He started to head out more into the open area so I shifted over and I threw him a one two punch, knock this sucker clean out. Another one bolts out and trys to leave the ring, but I threw a over hand right and also knock the sucker out too. Im sure there was another guy somewhere behind the bush, but I didnt see him. I had to pull out the hand caller to throw out some pup distress because my batteries just happened to give out me. Nothing came back for a little looksee. Well two aint bad and one of the two is a fair sized yote to boot.

Heres my right side now with two yotes down for the count

You can see the bigger yote right in the center with the smaller one just up to his right alittle ways.

Say cheese!

I soooo wanted to leave them right there, but after all that excitement there was no way I was leaving these guys behind. I took me just over two hours to hump these guys back out to my truck. Damn I so wished I a had a fricken skidoo.

Well I just had to share my excitement with you guys. Thats twice in a week now that Ive had to good hunts like this.

cheers

Thanks alot guys

I really like reading about people stories myself and by me sharing mine I was hoping that it would trigger people to share more of theirs.

Its suppose to be super cold (-50) out this weekend, so I wont be going out and plus Im a liitle sore from my first outing with the show shoes. I must use muscles that I dont normally use, cause damn my legs are sore. heh

Why were you thinking of leaving them?

I wanted to leave em behind because I it took me two hours to hump them out and I didnt feel like doing it. Also my body is tellin me that it didnt like it either. :)

If I wasnt so squeamish I would of skinned them there, but I dont like cutting things up.

Its the same way with fish too. Someone else has to do mine. :p
