I was up to the camp for a one day hunt this weekend. 10-12" fresh snow. Unplowed forest roads. Bad tires.... well, I got through.
Anyway, Saturday night, I took a spot on a high ridge overlooking two deer trails, with a third just visible at about 100 yards out.
Freezing my butt off, and calling periodically.
Getting close to end of legal, I see a deer with the biggest rack I've seen on a live deer crossing on the far trail (out of range for bow, and too thick anyway).
I tried to call to him, and he did stop and look my way, but carried on as if I wasn't there after a bit.
I was chewing myself out, figuring I'd muffed the call, when I walked out. There were his tracks, large and bold in the snow. But, a few yards the other side of him, were the fresh tracks of several does I couldn't see.
I guess a bird in the hand is better than one in the bush from his perspective.
Next year? Or next weekend? Time will tell.
