Weigh Sorting Brass

I've said this before, the Chamber sets the volume. If you insert a heavier piece of brass in the chamber, the volume(empty space) has been reduced. The chamber does not change.
This takes into account all being same lot# and brand of brass, if you start mixing brands and this and that, the alloy density could change a tiny bit along with internal shape of the brass.

I sometimes sort brass, sometimes sorted loaded rounds. One of my best relays was when I dropped the whole box of ammo in the grass while setting up and just threw them back in the box randomly...

That was mostly if not all mental.
Can you figure out why?

I do not understand this case weight sorting OCD.

I went to the Dr. this week and gained two pounds and my internal volume increased and my pants are smaller. :d

Quickload tells you to measure case volume with cases fired in your chamber. ;)

How much weight variation should be in Lapua 308 brass?

NOTE, Below is a link from ATK/Lake City Army Ammunition Plant stating their M118LR 7.62 cases are weight sorted. And the cases must fall within a two grain weight variation and this is for their long range sniper ammunition.

I've started using case weight as the first step in sorting cases.

For 1000 yard competition the cases are segregated into groups of +/- 0.25gn.

Then, these cases are charged to 0.00-0.02gn, this is as fine as my scale will resolve.

The loaded rounds are shot using a LabRadar to record velocities.

These are sorted +/- 3 ft/s, the LabRadar is accurate to 0.1% so this falls within the capability of the 'radar.

Doing this on a good scale is easy.

Vertical is not an issue if the load falls on a node (OBT) and is optimized by choice of components (OCW).

The Army loads to minute of man!

I'm trying to compete with 2.75" 3 shot groups, 3.75" 5 shot groups and 5" 10 shot groups at 1050 yards.

Good luck.

Luck mostly.
I worry a lot less about the minor reloading details than I did at first and now try to focus more on improving marksmanship.
Can only see TR guys hitting the hell out of the F-class V using 155's for so long before someone starts to think it ain't all about the ammo/bullet/equipment.

BCBRAD

I have never fired a shot in any type of competition, I prefer to go to the range when no one else is there.

That way when I leave the range I know beyond a shadow of doubt that I was the best shot at the range that day.
