Weight for .223 when hunting

I'm using my XCR-L in 6.8spc for deer this fall and when I score with it I'm switching back to my 223 barrel and going after deer again...

I knew you would appreciate that little "tidbit" of info on my upcoming deer season!

Whatever bullet you go with, use one you know will hold together & is ment for deer sized game...

Winchester factor load is 65 gr. That works. Sierra tells me the 69 gr match works and the 60 gr HP.

I've used the 60gr Sierra HP's in several 1-9" twist 223 rifles and they are always very accurate they are also not your typical Varmint bullet I have never shot a deer with them but I have put them broadside thru wolves and they die very fast.

right now the only gun I have on hand is my .223, I have a 30-30 but it's been acting up as of late (firing pin problem would be my guess since it's not setting off some of the rounds)

What happened to your .308 Norma? I'd be shooting that even if it is more powerful than necessary for deer.

Time to start reloading, Ive got some 50 gr. barnes x that I will eventually try on deer. Barnes is coming out with the 50 gr. TSX go i between the 45 and 53 gr.

I've shot deer with 70gr Speers in my 22/250. They are semi-spitzer, so a bit shorter and are easier to stabilize with a 12 or 14" twist.

I'm going to try some TSX next.

Used to load 90gr boattail softpoints for the mini 14. Probably not an optimal bullet rate for barrel twist, but will get you on the kill zone within 100 yards or so easily.

come on guys the 223 was a shell ment for human size game ar15 m16 and so on how many deer are bigger then a man .i have seen a lot of deer shot with this round and if hit in the heart lung area it is no problem a rib will not stop a 223 .and the very nice think about then is thy hit were you aim .find a premiam bullit and hit them right DUTCH

Properly placed 223 will kill a deer... problem comes from to many not being able to properly place the shot resulting in a wounded animal.

AGREE!

With Nosler's 60gr patition,and Barns X-bullets ranging from 45gr-70gr (62gr and 70gr being the best choice), to a Swift Sirrocco in 75gr there is no reason that one couldn't fill the freezer with a 223.

As with any cal, bullet placement is the key.
Alot of hunters think if your shooting a large cal rifle it's OK to take any shot at any time. I see, and hear this from the majority of hunters out there. An accurate placed shot trumps choice of cal every time, and if you pick your shots like everyone should your good to go IMO.

Nice way to sneak in yet another 223 for deer thread. It's been a few weeks.

Tikka T3 .223 with winchester factory 55 gr through the back of the neck and out the head.

Third one this year with that gun.

"...223 was a shell ment(SIC) for human size game ar15 m16..." The 5.56mm cartridge was designed to be used in an air crew survival rifle. Never intended to be used in a battle rifle. In any case, game is a lot tougher than people.
A varmint bullet is designed to expand rapidly upon impact with little penetration. Deer sized game requires penetration.

The 223 for deer is like a hand mower for a 30 acre field, it will get the job done but why bother when you could use a tractor, any hoo for the 10 billionth 223 for deer thread i have seen here i would like to say sure properly placed shot bla bla bla, when your adrenaline gets going and youre very excited the whole perfectly placed shot may go out the window, how ever this is just my personal opinion I have made lethal shots that dropped animals in there tracks out to 450 yards so i guess im not to bad of a shot but i still would not use a 223 for deer just because I Can.

If your gonna use .223 for deer, get an AR and mow the entire field down.

A 223 Rem has a bullet diameter of .224!
