I've never tried this before. I took the butt plate off of my Stevens 200 tonight and low and behold, there's a piece of styrofoam in it and it's hollow. This being a 300 win mag, and a fairly light gun, it's got some pretty good recoil. I took out the styrofoam and fillied it with cast lead .45 cal slugs and very coarse sand. It weighs a ton now. I only use it for taget, so the weight isn't a big deal.

Has anyone ever done this....trying to reduce recoil???

Nothing new there... it's an old method...

You will find that with the weight being loose it will eventually work at your recoil pad and force it to the rear bending it...

It has to do with inertia from the recoil... the weight will want to keep moving to the rear as nothing but the recoil pad is stopping it...

So is it really worth the increased weight of the gun??? I'm going to go and fire a few rounds tomorrow. If it makes a large difference, would it be worth making up say a quarter inch plate to put between the butt pad and the material, or will this eventually just strip out the screws that hold the butt pad on???

It does work very well. I've found ,taking a 3" length by 5/8" OD piece off copper pipe , filled with molten lead, placed in the stock bolt hole in the butt stock, works well.I give the copper pipe a few wraps of electrical tape until it fits snug in the stock bolt hole. Some shotgunners have tried loose lead pellets in the stock bolt hole. But as guntech says, it will eventually loosen your recoil pad or even break a butt plate.

I fit 5lbs of 45ACP bullets in mine (same gun), really tamed the tiger. I'm thinking of getting some pure lead and making something more permanent (but still removeable for hunting) so that I don't need to worry about it wrecking my precious stevens stock (;)), but I'm really not very worried about it. I can't see it doing much worse that stripping the recoil pad screw holes. I'll check it after a couple more trips to the range, and if there's any apparent damage, I guess I'll start to take some steps to rectify it.

On my Garands ( which, admittedly, are not big kickers ) I filled the pre-drilled holes that are meant for the cleaning kit and oil bottle with pennies - they fit perfectly and add a lot of wieght which really reduces recoil down to that of something like a .243. Makes it nice and easy for my kid to shoot off the bench but neither she or I would want to be carrying it far :)

I am going to epoxy some lead shot into my 300 Rum s butt to absorb some recoil, but also to balance it as well.
Would like to get it up to 9-10 lbs. or so.
Will be a little easier to pack w/new syn stock w/lead, than the 17.5 lbs it weighs now, with the Choate stock.
