[Weight] SR-22 & Marauder

While im still waiting (2 more weeks for the PAL course-exam) Im starting to wonder if I should get my money back on the SR-22 and get a marauder instead.. its the weight that i am worried about and since i can't go shoot yet, my mind make up crazy scenarios. Like most of you guys, i wont stop at 1 rifle.. my plan was to get 2 10/22 and 1 good bolt.. then grow up in the calibers.. 12ga shotgun is next.

Marauder stock is supposed to be around 3 lbs.. + a regular carbine is 5 lbs on the ruger site. Total 8 lbs minus the stock weight.. == dunno..

SR-22 is 6,5 lbs with zero mod/sights added to it

Is the Marauder really lighter than an SR-22 ? Should i keep the SR-22 ?

I got the SR-22 but my sec choice would be the Marauder kit

I am worried that the SR-22 is too heavy (maybe)
I may have the chance to get my money back and get a Marauder kit instead if its a good idea to ditch the SR22
If the difference is too close.. i might as well keep the SR22.. was hoping someone got the numbers for me
 
If you buy a 10-22 and put it in a marauder stock, you will have whatever barrel was on the 10-22. That may well be a stock light barrel if you use a standard 10-22. If you buy the Sr22, it comes with a heavier barrel. That heavier barrel may be the most significant factor in deciding the weight.
 
I have used both the SR-22 and the marauder. I find the Marauder wayyy lighter than my SR. However, my sr-22 has the dlask quad rails on it. I have not compared the two without the rails. The marauder is VERY light in my opinion and it is held closer to the body than the sr-22. The sr-22 can get very front heavy when you start adding mods.

That would be nice when you find the time to weight it with all your goodies.. and if its not too much to ask, weight the Marauder too. Can't wait to see your numbers!

My SR-22 would have approx the same features as yours.. i was thinking adding a Vortex Strikefire, dlask rails, and a flashlight (maybe a front grip & not sure about a bipod yet)
 
I'm going to give my vote to the SR22 as well. Weight is definitely an issue, though I don't find it too heavy.

The value of the heavy barrel can't be under estimated either, this is going to handle lots of rounds far better than the slimmer 10/22 barrel, and it's nothing to blast through 500+ rounds of .22lr, for $25 or less, in one shooting session. That's where a heavier barrel really pays off.

I like the way the Marauders look, but I just can't get on board with it. It just seems so chunky and over the top for no extra performance, save the folding stock.

In the end it's what you'll enjoy most, I'm all about function over looks. There are some incredible light 10/22 builds shown on CGN, I'm really close to buying a Tactical Solutions aluminum barrel, people say the whole rig weighs 3lbs!! That's light!!!!

Tactical? Depends what you mean, is that tactical looks or function? Not to mention what tactical purpose do you mean? If I'm climbing a mountain, I want the lightest possible gun, if I'm dealing with zombies, I can use the SR22's weight as a club when the ammo runs out, lol.

Just saying, think it over and don't drive the gun store nuts, you made a commitment to buy, stick with it or they may not be so friendly next time.

I only had 15 minutes to play with it, then i sealed the deal and gave it back till my permit arrive (or my brother permit). wasn't long enough for me to really feel the weight of the SR-22. That is why my mind had too much time to focus on the weight.

Really good point, didn't focused at all on the fact that the barrel was an heavier version of the 10/22 stock barrel. Can it compare to a Bull barrel or is it something better than the slim and inferior to the Bull ?

That is what made my day.. didn't thought about replacing the Barrel for a lighter version yet (for obvious never-fired-one-shot-with-a-10/22 and can't-play-with-it-yet reason)

I will carry it a lot.. hiking, camping in the wild, survival trip.. the weight is a concern when im already shaving grams from my gear, replacing all metal stainless steel with titanium, etc.. I choose the weight and hiking over the zombie bashing for this one.. i'll get a shotgun ready for the zombies!

The, do-I-return-the-SR-for-a-Nomad phase lasted a day or 2.. I am now 200% sure to keep the SR-22.. i'll try to keep my best local gun store happy! Well, as long as I spend all my paycheck at their store, im sure they will love me for life! I want my picture on their wall!

First off, I'm not going to claim to be any kind of a 10/22 expert. I'm learning, just like you.

It actually never even occurred to me to put a Tactical Solutions aluminum barrel into an SR22, I was just thinking of the 10/22 builds I've seen. Now I can't stop thinking about it!!!!

I do own a Bull Barrel, Target 10/22, let me just say that I can easily bench press 200 pounds and I find that the Bull Barrel weighs a lot. It's ridiculously thick, makes the SR22 barrel look skinny.

I've got six kids, and I rationalized that a bull barrel could handle a thousand rounds shot in one afternoon, better than any other 10/22 barrel. That's the theory anyway. I'd have to say it really just a range gun, being that heavy.

If I was concerned with hiking and weight issues, the $250 Tact Sol. aluminum barrel upgrade would definitely be on my list. I know Wanstalls carries them.

Keeping the local gun store happy, smart, just remember after a couple thousand dollars you get the right to press for a discount, universal rule.

If you are going to take it hiking I would recommend the marauder. It is NOTICEABLY lighter than the sr-22 once you put dlask rails on it. The sr-22 might be a pain in the ass to carry around with other gear. The bonus of the marauder is the folding stock as well which might make it easier to pack into a backpack.

For fun to shoot tacticool gun that you can put all kinds of toys on, I vote sr-22.

For a lightweight still tacticool (but made of plastic rather than aluminum) rifle, I would vote for the marauder.

I find the marauder feels a little cheaper than the sr-22 due to the materials, but the plastic on the marauder makes a huge difference in weight.

I own the sr-22 and my cousin has the marauder. I forgot to weigh it last night but it is hefty. If your a big guy you probably wont mind the weight (I kind of like the weight), but if your backpacking with it you would probably want the marauder.

Oh and if cost is of any concern, I spent around $1100 on my sr-22 getting it to the point where it is in that picture (pm me if you want a parts list). You would probably spend about $500-600 to get the marauder with iron sights (+ the cost of any optic you might want to put on).
 
If budget permits, I'd skip the long bull barrel, and simply concentrate on getting a quality barrel of a sporter or light contour. You don't need a heavy barrel to shoot accurately in a 22, you need a well made barrel. A long bull barrel in a 10-22 is a lot of useless weight.
 
ok guys, let me do some Bacardi Gold Rum Math..

SR-22 OAL == 32.75" - 36.00"
Barrel Length == 16.12"

OAL(32,75) - Legal (26") = 6,75 extra uesless inches
convert to aluminium

ideal shortest legal unrestricted SR-22 barrel lenght == 9,37 inches barrel ~ 10 inch alum barrel

and I guess they dont produce 10" .. i saw a few ~12"

Damn Bacardi.. is it right ?
