I was walking the mutt Saturday and came across a healthy looking red coyote. Wasn't quite as red as a red fox, and was significantly bigger in the body than a fox. The tail was really bushy too. Is this just an uncomon color for a yote, or is it possible it's a hybrid? Didn't have a rifle with me, or I'd have a picture to post.

I don't think that yotes interbread will with foxes. My understanding is that yotes will kill foxes (and your pet dogs) to protect their pack territory

I am not sure where you are but in Ontario around Algonquin Park they have stopped hunting and trapping of wolf and coyote to protect what they are calling the red wolf. I have seen a few of these and to me they are nothing more than a colour phase coyote or brush wolf. Haven't heard of one in the prairies yet!!

Ya i have seen what you are talking about. We shot a dark red dog the other day. He was big though. He had a variety of colors on him, but he had some read dark reds on his side. We thought he was a wolf but it was a yote

I seen a trail cam pic from another guy that hunts around Algongin Park, hes got pics of 4 red wolf pups at his bear bait site. I hunt about 100km from algongin and seen some weird looking coyotes- I'm betting they are red wolves now.
