Posted this in the Milsurps.com forum, sorry if it's a "repeat" story for some of you!

Seems I never run short of strange questions.

What happened to this Indian 2A? Here are some pics sent to me be the owner of this 2A (or would it be a 2A1?). Why would its markings have been erased? And the star on the barrel knox (damage to chamber?)

the star means cord worn near muzzle one can only guess why someone would grind off the sn and butt markings

Hey Lou I have a No 4 Longbranch that has had all its barrel markings ground out and a few grinds on its reciever. It also has a five pointed star on its barrel and two of them on its bolt head. I was told an asterisk like in your pic means rust or pitting in the barrel or chamber. No one has given a reason on the grinding or five pointed stars.

Looks almost as if a .303 has been converted to a .308.

By actual test, there is no difference between the steel, heat treat, of a .303 SMLE and a 7.62 SMLE. Anything along those lines is sales puff.

Arsenal marks could be removed for a variety of reasons: concealment of numbers made, hiding the source, concealment of manufactuing date, things such as that. If you are supplying "old" weapons to people who are shooting at your next-door neighbours, it just won't do to have this month's manufacturing date on them!

Further to that, when I was at the Pattern Room at Enfield, I asked to use a good AKM (they being utterly unavailable here at that time). The one they showed me came from a rack with close to 50 rifles on it, all still in grease, all brought from Northern Ireland. The rifle I was handed was made in Russia, 5 months previous to my visit to Enfield!!! The Yanks did it smarter when they wanted Klacks for Afghanistan: had them made in Egypt on Soviet equipment....... with Russian markings!

This is a new one on me, Lou. Hope you get it straightened out.

Anything on the left side of the butt-socket?
