Okay I am just throwing this idea out there...

I am sure if I am way out of line the mods will lock this thread.
But okay, say one person wanted to "make" thier own equilivant to Aquilla Super Sniper Subsonic 60 grain 22 LR here in Canada?
Does anyone have any bullet casting ideas? And dare I say what strange powder formula one would use? Crimping too...

Except for the powder load I do not think this is too much of a stretch, apparently citizens of the former USSR used to reload 22 LR, and during the depression in North America, many strange things were done with 22 LR, so starving people could shoot deer with 22s?

I am ready for it...
Anyone willing to suggest something here?
Perhaps this is too crazy an idea?

Could this be as simple as pulling bullets from factory rimfire and seating heavier 60 grainers? Lots of people cast lead bullet, and you could reuse the metal from the pulled bullets. How hard could it be to make a mold for .22cal 60-grain bullets?

Aside from being illegal for deer, how are you planning on priming a rimfire?

Sunray, I did not say I would use this on deer....
Lets get this perfectly understood.

All I wanted to look into was making my own equilivant to 60 grain Aquilla SSS.
I am not going to use it on deer, period.
I planned on pulling 22 short cases and using them. I am just putting this idea forth. And anyone with helpful ideas I would like to hear from. Thank you fellas, for the responces.

It'll have to be for an outside lubricated heeled bullet, as the bullet diameter for a 22RF is the same as the case diameter. I'm not saying you couldn't get one custom made, but it's not a straight forward normal 22 cal mold.

Try contacting Lee they offer a custom mold service. A friend of mine had one made for his .41 colt and it uses a healed style bullet.

A while back some 22 BR shooters were pulling 22 LR ammo apart and matching rim/bullet weights for better accuracy. There are bullet pullers available for this that take the rim priming into consideration I believe. Seems to me that the tools weren't cheap, but when you're chasing that smaller group cost is secondary for a lot of folks. - dan

Dan thanks for your comments, I appreciate it.
I have gleaned some information off the internet on this subject, mostly from metallic silouette shooter's posts, getting the most out of thier 22 magnums. Mind you I have to keep this in mind as rim thickness may defeat me.

Shell holder, 25 ACP reamed out if required, bullet seating using 22 Hornet dies. I am not sure of the Hornet die though as lead is a whole lot softer than copper...
I have sent a email to Lee Precision, I wish to know if they will make a 22 healed bullet mould. So more to follow....
Silverback is helping me research this too thankfully!

Cheers

i'm puzzled -isn't the Aguila ammo available in Canada?

also if you're looking for accurate subsonic ammo can't you just use subsonic ammo, sort the rounds by weight, and then use the RCBS tool that allows you to sort cases by rim thickness.? maight not be a heavy bullet, but should produce good accuracy.

Well, John mentioned weighing the 22 ammo, but the components that each round is made up of may vary enough to throw off your shots. If you could weigh the bullets and cases seperately, you could compensate for the weight differences. In 22 LR, this is theory, but it works in centerfire BR, so I can't see why it wouldn't in rimfire. FWIW - dan

Aquilla Super Sniper Subsonic 60 grains shot sideways thru the paper at 20yds out of my Anshutz. Your mileage may differ.
