After tumbling some brass tonight, I noticed a pretty weird smell coming from my tumbler. Closest thing I can relate the smell to is cat urine.

It was pretty bizarre, you guys have any ideas what it might be?

The media is getting old so it might be time to swap it out I guess. The tumbler is a Frankfurt Arsenal.

And no, my cats did not piss in the tumbler :p

did the motor feel hot?...as a motor burning out sometimes stinks..maybe smelled like a car driving with the parking brake on.
this would be my quess on it

I checked if it was the motor but it didn't seem to be, that was my first guess. I will probably run it again tomorrow, see if I can trigger it again.

Cat piss smells like cat piss because of the ammonia!!!!!!!!!!! Are you using Brasso????!!!!!!!!???????????!!!!!!?????!!!!!! It might be the ammonia eating your brass, although I can't see how that would happen!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

In all seriousness is it an ammonia smell?

I do use brasso, but have used brasso in this particular batch of media for quite some time now with no ill-effects.

The tumbler wasn't super expensive, so I wouldn't be surprised if the motor was burnt out.

There's also the possibility that I loaded it with too much brass.

Maybe you forgot to wipe your brass?

:)

If it's coming from inside the bowl, it isn't your motor. Might be a combination of smells (burned powder residue, brasso, etc.). If your medium was damp in the past, it could be mold or plain old rot.

Might be the motor, had an old electic lawn mover, and it stunk bad when i turned it on once, last time i turned it on, so off to the dump

See if the plug gets really hot when it is plugged in and running. We had one do that once. It had shorted out abit inside the plug and the hard plastic of the plug was slowly melting/burning. It smelled alot like cat piss.

If it's the motor, plug it into a powerbar with a breaker and see if it blows. As it fails it will probably draw a lot more current. Or, find a good cat pee odour remover and continue until you have a real problem, ie fire or failure.

Ok, so the wife was cleaning the litter boxes tonight while I was loading some ammo, and the exact same smell came back, so, I'm thinking my tumbler is in the clear.
