Just used a red dot setup for the first time since fall 2019..
The dot that was once round, then had a little bit of star action now turned into a huge blob with star pattern..

Until I can get into my optometrist, which is booking until late September, what are my options?

Thinking eotech, but just want other options from others who experience the same problem.

Thank you in advance

M: There is no optic which can correct for astigmatism. None. Ageing eyes and changing vision happens to most of us, some sooner, some later. You need corrective RX eyewear. Fact of life. But fear not, there is good news.... ;)

Corrective eyewear and shooting is totally do-able. I wear bifocals with astigmatism correction. Millions of us shoot every day with Rx eyewear.

However specialized shooting glasses with a Rx are a hassle to find with good side shields and temples that hug the face and do not interfere with ear muff seal. For some of us our Rx keeps changing with age, and the Rx is a moving target. I still have not found the optimal eye wear.

What I do is wear my regular bifocal eyeglasses, and use Allen "fit over shooting glasses" which fit over my eyeglasses. But I cut off the temple arms with a dremel (because they prevent ear muff seal), kept the side shields portion (which is not a good side shield because its ventilated), and rigged a cord and cord lock for cinching the over-glasses around my head. The Allen over-glasses have a shelf on the top brow which rest on my regular eyeglasses, and so not much force in the cinching cord is needed to hold them very steady and comfortable.

These are not optimal, but are serviceable. Meanwhile I am researching a dedicated Rx shooting glasses with side shields.

i found out that red dot in a scope are easier to deal than a red on his own.
reducing the brightness is helping for sure.

I've wrote several posts in other forums about this, I have Keratoconus, and I've been wearing Scleral contact lenses for the last couple of yrs, and it's been a 100% improvement. I use "cheaters" for iron sights, and depending on the distance and reticle? the dot is "round" LOL. Good luck. Personally I use the Holosun "circle-dot" reticle and it works great.

On the cheap end, a Vortex Spitfire Gen1 or Gen2 is a 1x prism scope that works much like a red dot, but without the dot bloom for those of us with the A word.

On the expensive end, a high end LPVO like a Vortex Razer Gen2 1-6 (or Gen3 1-10), or Swarvo 1-6x, will also serve as a red dot replacement when ran at 1x.

If you are used to a red dot at 1x then maybe think about a NPZ Rakurs PM.
I have a number of them set up for pic rails.
You can get the commie style side rail lones too.

There is a good review of them on Russianoptics.

Check yourt email for a link.

I have the same issues and found an optic with an etched dot/reticle is the solution. Vortex Spitfire optic is an example. Comes with illumination and as it isn't a red dot but an etched dot, it doesn't star burst. Check them out.

Edit: sorry, see this solution was posted earlier, my bad for not reading the entire thread.

This won't help you immediately. I had astigmatism in my dominant eye. Wore glasses for years. Then, consulted with a laser eye surgeon. After the exam they recommended mono vision. They did corrective eye surgery on my dominant eye giving it and ultimately me better than 20/20 with both eyes open.

For shooting handgun or red dot it's excellent. Open sights up close are not as easy without taking time to deadeye my open but non dominat eye. Long range open sights with only dominant eye open is easy.

The cost of mono vision as expected was half of full laser eye surgery. It is one of the best things I ever had done.

Food for thought.

There's not a whole lot you can do about it. Our vision degrades over our lives.

If you can afford it, you can get cataract surgery and that will almost certainly fix it. If you have cataracts the surgery is free as are the basic lenses, but you have to pay to get the multi focal lenses.

If you are going to your optometrist, you should consult his opinion on what type of lenses to use for the implant as lenses used for cataract surgery are much like lenses is scopes. They vary in sharpness and resolution.

This is a point most ophthalmologists will not take the time to explain to you, so do your research to make sure you don't end up with 20-20 vision at 20 feet, and see impressionist art at 1000 yards.

+1 for Corneal Replacements

Maple57 has a good point re Cat-repl. I had that done a few years ago due to glaucoma & cataracts together and now use Costco reading glasses (with opthal approval) for "Fine print" but normally no glasses. I also have found I can shoot well with a scope w/o glasses, but if I'm trying to get under MOA I'll use the reading glasses to see the reticle a bit better. I use a fairly fine ret for my .22 and .223 and the glasses help. And the books I read are 'black & white', Not 'Black & beige' .
BTW - I didn't get the multi-focal lenses cause you have to deal with 'progressive-head-tilt' like the glasses I now don't need. May be OK for some folks . . .
