Well, I got an iltis ...

For safety, the Iltis was supposed to run in all wheel drive, except if performing tight turns on dry pavement. However, if you are the one paying for the parts, and are primarily doing city driving, I would recommend 2 wheel drive unless unfavorable driving conditions exist.

When moving the 4 wheel drive lever to 2 wheel drive, you do not force it, but rather flip it forward and it will go out of 4 wheel drive when it is ready. Too often the drivers would force the lever forward, which only bent the linkage at underneath, resulting in no capability to go out of 4 wheel drive. We (the mechanics) would go underneath with a long screwdriver and bend it straight again. Seems like we had to do that a lot.

The unstucker kit was basically the same between the old M151A2, the Iltis and the gas 5/4 ton chevs. Only the adapter plate and wheel nuts would be different. Here is a shot of the kit setup:

thank you Sir.

It took me a minute or two to actually figure out the 4WD light. Normally, in every other vehicle I've driven, the light indicates that you are IN 4WD. Not the case with the Iltis, and if you look closely at the light it shows the transfer case disconnected. And like you said, the manual goes even further to call it an abnormal driving condition. There is absolutely nothing wrong with driving in 2WD, but the light and the manual would have you think different. All somewhat backwards if you ask me.

just looking into getting this registered in Nova Scotia as an Antique.

regulations made under Section 10 of the
Motor Vehicle Act
R.S.N.S. 1989, c. 293
O.I.C. 73-433 (May 15, 1973), N.S. Reg. 36/73

1 There is a class of vehicle designated and known as an antique vehicle.

2 An antique vehicle is a motor vehicle which is at least thirty (30) years old or is a recognized classic.

3 A vehicle may be registered as an antique vehicle where

(a) the vehicle has been tested for originality, running order and safety and certified as such;

(b) the owner of the antique vehicle is a resident of Nova Scotia;

(c) the antique vehicle is in addition to any other class of motor vehicle registered in the name of the owner and is not used as a family vehicle or for business purposes;

(d) there is in force in respect of the vehicle a policy of automobile insurance providing public liability and property damage insurance of not less than the minimum limits prescribed by the Motor Vehicle Act as proof of financial responsibility; and

(e) upon application for registration, the owner pays the recording and annual registration fee.

I had originally attempted to insure mine as an antique also, but it became such a hassle that I just decided to go the normal route. That's where problem number two entered. The Iltis doesn't have a regular 16 digit VIN, and most insurance companies won't recognize an abnormal VIN. I had to shop around for a week or two trying to find and insurance company that would make an official acception. I also learned during this process that if the vehicle didn't come with a title, that it would be impossible to get one, ie. if it wasn't street legal when it left the military, it never would be. Quite a few people have been bamboozled into buying an Iltis that they plan on driving, but get caught with an unlicensable "ATV".
If you run into any problems with licensing or insurance, let me know and I can help you out. With any luck it should be straight forward for you, but that's what I thought too ; )

Good point. On the early sales, the Iltis were sold for ranch and off road use only. They may well have been tagged by VIN that way. Later sales were for road use, so they could be licensed. It is harder to play games with serial and model numbers like in the old days. I have seen more than a few of the old jeeps and trailers registered under their CFRs and as CJ5, rather than by serial number and proper model number.

I tried to be honest a couple years ago when registering a newly purchased M38A1Cdn3. But I quickly realized I was getting into a blind alley that way when the licensing people were trying to decide if such vehicles should be on the road. So in the end, CJ5 it was.

A buddy of miner had one of those in Middle Musquodoboit, sunk a ton of money into it buying parts from all over Hell's half acre and then sold it sortly after he finished it. Did the same thing previously to a Kharmann Ghia and a MGB. I don't know what he's working on these days, I should pop down and see how thick his wallet is these days...

Nice Iltis I also own one with a m101 trailer but I like my CDN M151a2 much more .I will be selling the ILTIS this summer it has been restored from the ground up also and will go with lots of spare parts .

Seeing as how this Iltis he just got is up for sale on the E&E I would wager a guess it didn't come with registration and he was one of the unlucky "bamboozled" type... I am sorry to hear this as a fellow Iltis Owner. They really are an amazing driving machine!

Just a guess, but I don't think so. It appears to have a NS inspection sticker and I'm pretty sure he mentioned it was saftied. Been a couple years since I lived in NS, but that strikes me as a registered vehicle.

You're in Ontario. Have you not heard of Lant Insurance and their Silver Wheels policy?

They insure thousands of historic/antique vehicles.

Example: My M38A1CDN3...$118.00 per year, with no restrictions such as parade use only or limited yearly mileage.

Their only requirement, apart from an appraisal, is that you be licensed with your own daily driven vehicle.

I just found this thread! I sold my Iltis last year....for an upgrade. I also run a phpbb Iltis forum. The yahoo forum is great, but I am not a fan of the style. It is still small, but growing. Http:// www.iltisforum.com .

I feel for the OP, if that is his truck. The trick is to buy one with a tag already. The next fun bit is insurance. I got State Farm on board, but they needed to call the insurance bureau to get a variance on the Iltis VIN. Took about 4 trips to the MTO to sort it. A safety was easy, but the mechanic needs to be aware that if the truck didn't come with it, it doesn't need it....like signals and reverse lights.

This is my upgrade....

Hi there,

I haven't checked this thread for days, I figured it was pages back by now... I guess it's still alive.

I do have Registration, and there's no issues... I wasn't "bamboozled", or unlucky. Actually I'm very lucky to have an iltis that looks like this!

I just listed it for sale to see if there was any interest as there are currently none for sale in NS and few for sale in NB... I've got my sights on a BMW R-1200-GS Motorcycle, but if I can't find one... the iltis will be my summer ride.

I originally got the iltis as a hunting vehicle, but with this one in such great shape, it's a shame to drive it in the salt, which I haven't done....

I'm 100% happy with the iltis, I have registration, current MVI and there are no issues... just to be perfectly clear lol

All the best guys!

John

My experience is somewhat limited (~2 years) but the Iltis worked pretty well for us off road, especially compared to the MiLCOTS/Silverado which replced them.

There is no way I would attempt to take our trucks in some of the areas/"roads" we used our Iltis's in before.

I'll just add that I am quite happy with our MiLCOTS, just so we are clear. Much happier in fact.

Look into acquiring an (Ontario) assigned VIN to get around this - it's done in the US and in BC, I can't see Ontario motor vehicle being too different, since I know they accept BC assigned VINs from a humvee a customer of mine sold to a guy in Ontario - my customer had put an assigned VIN when he registered the humvee, although it wasn't necessary in BC. Incidentally I've registered an ex- military Unimog using an assigned VIN, among other oddballs (ex brit landrover defender). Or bring it to BC register it here then take it back to Ontario - JUST KIDDING about that. Here in BC you can register almost anything, I registered a riding lawnmower once.
