Well, I have decided on the .22 Hornet

well...........I have owned about six rifles in this chambering, including a Ruger #1. The most accurate was a Ruger #3, and I owned it TWICE. The only one I have left is a Winchester Model 43 Deluxe, and it is a sweetheart.

Reloading (or loading) this cartridge has always been VERY VERY fiddly for me. And I have fairly small fingers....... The brass is definitely fragile, and loads are temperamental. In general, I would say that I lose at least one brass out of ten to a collapsed shoulder, and at least 60% of my "Dominion" brass split in the case neck on the first reload.

But it is a HOOT to shoot, and if you have time to work up a load it can be deadly accurate. I reckon I will pretty well always have at least one rifle in the locker chambered for this cartridge.

I have a #3 in 22 Hornet & I am thing about getting it reamed to the K.I had a K but traded it off & I only fired one rnd in my basement to see what the K case looked like.DAN>>>

from what i have seen with the k-hornet, remington brass seems to be the best. with winchester cases i get a few splits on fire forming and with S&B, the cases split more often than not when fireforming.

i REALLY like the ZKW 465, the set trigger is great for accuracy work, it can be set so low that it seems if you breath on it the gun will fire.

it is also a nice feeling to reload a case with 11-12 grains of powder instead of 40-50.

My father gave me his, a Winchester Model 43 he bought off a native seal hunter years ago.

He used to hunt deer with it on Vancouver Island.

All neck shots with iron sights.

I bought bases and rings and will scope it soon (New year's resolution)

I have had 22 hornet & had it K'd was a real fun round altho a little finicky to load for, I aslo have a couple of 218 Bee's one in a Martini & a Ruger No 1B I find the 218 bee is a lot easier to work with & find much better accuracy & performance with the Bee

Thanks for all of your input fella's. I have been doing some thinking over the last few days and eventhough the Ruger #1 is a fine rifle, I am someone who is not happy with off the shelf guns and want something a little more custom.

Now I am flerting with the idea of going with a cooper.

It might take me a while to save for but if I am only planning on owning 1 centerfire, I might as well make it one to remember.

Here are the model choices I have come up with:

Prosper, I actually researched this and there is a fellow in Manitoba that deals with coper and I have read that a 6 month wait is what its at.

IMHO, the Ruger single shot is a classier rifle than ANY bolt action available, but it's just MO!
This little guy is a Stevens Marksman that was originally in 32RF.
A friend took one of my Anschutz 22lr barrels and rechambered it for 22K Hornet.
I keep the loads at a minimum because of the weak action, but it is a super fun rifle to play with, and is quite accurate at 50 yards.
I have no problem hitting a pop bottle top with it at 25 yards, the range at
which a beaver's head is likely to be at max range.
The scope is a 20's era Belding and Mull 2.5X.
The rail for the scope was also built by my friend, as well as all internals for the action.
