Well I thought I had my next rifle lined up.. Then I watched this...

I had the Mini 14 last year for a bit and really liked it. Ended up selling it in the end, I found when scoped I couldn't get a decent cheek weld and with the red dot it was decent at 100yrds but not great. Ended up buying a 16.5" 700 for a decent price to replace it and am very happy with that decision.

Very nice!

I figured cheek issues would occur, likely solved by an adjustable piece from tac pro.

I like the rem, I love their actions but all the finish on the barrels I have seen as of late are worrisome. For a rifle I intend on beating the hell out of I want some durability in the bluing on the metal.

Ive owned countless Mini 14 and none were MOA but they have downed alot of coyotes, beavers, coons, skunks and badgers. They are 100% fun and 100% reliable in all conditions. Ive also owned pretty much every NR semi on the market and Ive never had one that shot MOA constantly and have never seen any of my friends. Semi Autos arent bolt guns, dont expect bolt gun accuracy.
My only gripe with the Mini 14 is the mag are finicky to seat and lock in.

I owned one for a year. Stainless with a wooden stock, good looking, nice handling, Functioned very well; shot like s***. First round out of a cold, clean barrel sub MOA... every time; each consecutive shot after that opened up to where you were lucky to hit something a foot square at 100 yards from a bench rest with a good scope. My old Remington 78 puts .223s in the same hole at 100 yards, shot after shot.

BTW, the A-Team used them, and they could not hit a man-sized target with them; pretty true to life I figure.

Remington's are blasted and black oxided, nothing wrong with that process. Ruger American's are blasted and blued.
I'd be more concerned about the machine work on the Ruger then the exterior finish on the Rem. You can always have the Rem refinished, but it's not really an option to have poor machine work cleaned up.

^ good advice.

I have been looking at at home how to's on how to fix up the ruger 'bolt zipper" sound lol.

Thankfully both the SPS varmint 16.5 barrel and ruger ranch are hard to find.

So I have some time.

I got a pair of the 16.5" 700's when our $$ was good for $600 each, one 223 one 308. Don't know if I'd call them light and handy, but they are manageable for lugging around hunting.

Hmmm, I mean im calling it light and handy compared to a chassis type rifle or a 22-24-26 inch barrel rifle.

Im sure if I was looking for even lighter hand handier I could find one (duno about in 223 though).

I like how short it is. the 16.5 barrel is nice.

jelly about that $600 each they are 900 and tax now.

I found one for $920... 16.5 barrel...

the 26" barrel sps is $800... REEEE

I had the rem sps with the short barrel and even in the safe it rusted. good thing is after grit blast and ceracote it was one tough rifle. it would outshoot any ruger mini by a wide margine.

Cerracote is definitely one of the best metal coatings available today. I found a few ways to keep any black oxides firearms (Remington and many others use it) well protected from rust.
Warm the parts with a heat gun or hair dryer, they don't been to be too hot to touch, just warm. While it's warm, rub either paste wax, grease, or Frog Lube liberally on the parts while still keeping it warm with the heat. When you have it all covered, let it sit & cool for 10 mins, then wipe down with a dry rag and you are done.

Hey freddyfour,

Who makes the sling mount on the butt stock on that mini14? I’m looking for one with the attachment point on the side, all I’ve seen is the attachment point on the top or bottom. Any help would be appreciated.

I can't remember where I ordered it from, maybe directly from them

ds tactical is where I got mine, but I don't think they're stocking anything from specter any more.
Actually, they gave me one for the m16, they attach to the rifle the same way.

And a mini14 + low warne ruger rings, will allow you to mount a prostaff 5 2.5-10x scope with a little filing of the hand guard under the bell.
No cheek rest needed for proper use.

I never got 1moa from the rifle though, working on it.

So a rem 700 rust bucket for 999

Ruger ranch with poor machining for 600

Ruger mini that may or may not shoot for 1200

Hmmm... This is when I wish AR's had the non res stamp.

Have you thought about a ruger gunsite scout in .223, stainless barrel, laminate stock, box mag, nice looking compact rifle. Throw on a full length rail and you can use a traditional scope and it’s got irons as well.

I’ve been eyeballing one in .308 and the rem 700 atr in .308 as they fit my criteria and are both available in a left handed bolt action.

I had not been untill now... Hmmm
Never played with a scout rifle would be inclined to try it before i slap on a full length rail.

Or even give the irons a go lol

I handled a right handed one in .308 a few months ago, it felt real nice in my hands and shouldered. Smooth action, I hear the iron sights are quite nice. The full length rail you can get also has a rear peep on it, add and rings and you have the best of both worlds.

So do i, but there's a lot more out there for bolt/semis in the 600/1200 range than those 3.
