I've had it happen to friends an heard it happening to others but it finally happened to me.
I got kept up a tree by a sow with cubs. Very little cubs. Very angry sow. 2 other large bears and the dead boar I shot. It was a fun night!
It started out normal. Bait in the morning. Check trail cams. Go back to base camp for Corona and a nap. At 5 I returned to my bait sight but was dropped off 1/4 mile from it and walked in. Here's where I think I went wrong. I put some molasses on my boots to help spread the scent. I do this while I bait never tried while I was on stand. I got to my climber and since I was for lack of better words to lazy to cut some more branches climbed to my 8' max. High enough so I thought. Should have known better since my last experience with a bear running right at me. But I settled in and at 6 o'clock I spot a bear to my left. It looked to small but I watched it at 120/150 yards. 20 mins later it reappeared but looked a lot bigger. At 120 yards I almost shot but noticed the spot it would have fallen into. I passed. I really wanted a clear Clean close shot over my bait. It turned out I passed on the sow that caused me some grief. As time played out the cat size cubs came up and played within 20 yards of me. Great time watch them. The sow stayed hidden in the thick undergrowth only giving the odd head or neck shot. As darkness came with 10 minutes of legal light left they were still very close. A loud growl sent the cubs up trees very close to the one I was in. Not a comfortable feeling. She then started coming directly at me slowly but made a lot of noise. I shouldered my rifle and prepared for a very ethical decision. As I held the gun in he direction I noticed a large shadow right behind my tree. I froze as the shadow moved. The sow snarled I looked her way as I heard claws on pine bark. The bear was standing against the back of my tree. The lazy part of me had decided I didn't need to use a ratchet strap to hold my climber as I wasn't planning on shooting from a standing position. I've never heard a nose so loud and I grew up with hounds. Less then a foot under my feet was his head. He backed down when I stood up and walked around the tree he was now climbing up directly under my feet and pawing at the metal. Of course I couldn't get a shooting position with the gun on my shoulder. I almost shoot thru the bottom of my stand but instead yelled loud for some reason. I scared the bear for sure. He did a 180 and I hammered him with my 458wm. Distance from muzzle to bear was about 7'. It flattened him and all hell broke loose. The cubs were screaming and the sow was pissed. I stayed in the tree. My boar actually got back up then fell over and rolled just out of sight an moaned 3 short moans. After 20 mins of crying and snarling things quieted down. Then I could hear the faint sound of a atv. Never been so happy to hear one. It was 9 o'clock be for my buddies figured something was wrong and came to look for me. My buddy drives extremely slow getting in a then hops of the quad an starts walking in. I'm yelling at him to get a gun because the sow. When he realized what was going on well let's just say I didn't think my atv could go that fast. He left. While he was gone 2 more bears came in. Finally I see headlights returning. It's now 920 pm. I'm still up the tree. Buddy lays on the horn then steps out of the truck and into a hole. Breaks his fibia so he is really yelling loud. Other buddy a him manage to make it half way to me. 2 bears head for the hills the sow remains. After 10 minutes of lights and yelling she retreated down hill behind me. I could see her eyes reflect and hear her huffing. I got down quickly grabbed my orange gear and case and stumbled onto my dead bear. I grabbed his paws and dragged him the 80 yards to the logging road while my buddies covered me. Got him in th truck and left.
All in all a exciting night. Turns out it was a small boar 160/175 lb range.
I got a bear with my new 458 an got the close clear shot I wanted. I probably won't put molasses on my boots again
Sorry it was a long story just thought id share
