After what seemed to be my 100th set... I finally managed to call in a 2 coyotes this morning. Smoked the big thick furred male at 40yrds. Missed the ratty tailed 2nd one on a couple long running shots. I was one happy coyote hunter today. I know calling coyotes works but it's a rough go here in southern Ontario most times.

The fresh snow helped a lot, found some fresh tracks followed the into the first fence line. Set up the foxpro
Female lone howls... one pops out at about 600yrds howling back. Go quiet for a min or 2, few more mins with the female howls and out comes #2 at about 300yrds. Crosses the fence line, I loose sight of that one. I know it's coming but can't see it. But the big one is still watching at the 600yrd mark. The 2nd one comes back to the east into the field again. at bout 250 yrds now. Then starts heading back towards the east woodlot. I turn the caller back on the female howls from the caller stops the 2nd one. I mute the caller again not exactly sure what to do to get these dogs to break and start coming.

I decide,...not much to loose at this point so I go to coyote pup screams,... that does it! the 2nd dog at 250yrds turns and sprints back to the fence line. I loose sight of it again. But now the big one that was howling, still at 600yrds breaks into a full run, straight at the caller. So I keep the caller running. Tried looking for the 2nd one as I figure it's gonna wind me anytime now. But the big dog is still hard charging in. So I just stay on it... It breaks the 200 yrd mark and now my ticker starts a pumping( love it) 150yrds..100yrds still running hard, 75...50 just locked right in on the caller still screaming pup in distress which is about 30 yrds over my left shoulder.
Finally at 40yrds the big male spots me. So the time is now!....the big coyote starts to bolt back to the east woodlot on a hard angle. Too late for him, I lead him by about 8" from his nose... the .243 savage barks and I see a cloud of snow and the big male skids to a halt in the fresh snow. The .65gr V-max finds its mark.. punches a hole mid-body
I now roll up to my knees and start scanning for the 2nd dog.... there he is,.... bugging out straight down the fenceline on the west side, dammit no shot. It crosses the fence row heading back to the east woodlot it came from at about 250yrds. The .243 barks... just underneath him he stumbles but it is still screaming southeast... the .243 barks again well behind him somewhere. Then he disappears into the woodlot he came from. That was as much fun as a guy can take on a snowy Monday morning... I pick up my empties, collect myself and the foxpro. Trudge out to collect my furry prize. Rope him up,.. a bit of a drag back to the truck but felt good to feel the weight. Finally!!! The stars have aligned and I'll be dammed if this coyote calling thing actually can happen.

Good luck coyote callers if you are reading this and your down on your luck..take heart it can actually happen don't give up. Luck favors the persistent !

If I can figure out how to post pics I will put one up. I know this is Not as good as Fratri's posts with his awesome pics but hopefully it inspires guys to keep after these challenging predators

Awesome and congrats! If you have trouble posting pics, pm me and I will get them up for you. Looking forward to seeing them as I sure others are.

A friend I hunt with once described the second coyote of a pair running hard, as only a scared coyote can run, as "a grey streak about one foot tall and about 6 feet long." Once they decide to really leave, they cover ground in a hurry, and are very hard to hit. Good story.

Thank you so much appreciate your help. Sorry not better pics guys, wasn't thinking was out alone this morning and was just so "basking in the glory" I forgot to try to get better pictures!

No need to apologize. ANY picture of a dead yote is a good picture.

Congrats on a great hunt

Have to say if you can get out after a fresh snowfall. Finding the fresh tracks narrows down the areas to start calling. I did one set in the concession west first off. And blanked but got on those fresh tracks heading into the east block an out they came. Sometimes the conditions just allow it to happen. Did another stand after the one I killed on. By then the north wind was kicking in and really knocked down the callers sound from getting out there. Have to say I’ve called them in before but it’s been a lot of stands and at least a winter or 2 from the last ones. But today was awesome!!!

Congrats! Nothing like the first one...:)

Before you get your first, you "know" that calling works...but after you nail one, you KNOW it works! That confidence will make all the difference in the future. Enjoy!
