Went out to a small farm I have permission to hunt at for my first crack at turkey hunting. Didn't go so well, couldn't even get a response to my call and I know there are usually turkeys in the area. Might be due to this.

The coyotes around my area don't seem to bother the turkey's much. Turkeys are way faster than a coyote and can fly...

I watched a coyote chase two turkeys out of a field and called him into about 50 yards. Did not have any buckshot so I let him go. And I have seen quite a few coyote prints around the edges of the fields.

Turkeys know their limitations better than coyotes do, so that aint the problem. I think the toms are still henned up untill about now. I've heard more gobbling this morning and continuing well into the afternoon, than I've heard all season.

Stay with it, you will eventually get one!.. Good luck.:)

Well, I think it's confirmed that you have tractors in the area. Damn things are no good spook all the turkeys, I shoot everyone I see...

Keep at it. If you know there are turkeys in the area and you're not hearing gobbles at first light, try in the mid-day when the toms are actively looking for hens and have finished their morning "routine". Could be they are just not roosting there but might be showing up later in the day.

Also, almost every new turkey hunter calls way too much. I still think I call too often myself. If you can, find where they are gobbling at day break and try to figure out where they are going to go when the come down from the roost. It is a hell of a lot easier to call them when they want to go in that general direction vs. trying to call them back.

You have to pay it like the hen - you want it but don't sound desperate :D

that's sig worthy material right there.

I've been a little sick so I took this morning off and have company coming for today and tomorrow. I might sneak out for a morning hunt tomorrow though and all day Monday too. I'll have my new to me Lee Enfield and wounded cotton tail call with me just in case.

I was out hunting 2 weekends ago and a coyote popped out and saw my decoys but didnt see the real one I had coming in! He then ran off into the bush where more were gobbling. Ruined my day that one didn't come in and the rest of the day was DEAD. I wish he had of came in range!!!
