Yup, wealth of knowledge that Gus Fischer is. My armorer friend in south dakota knows his reputation well.
I'm interested to know if the growing headspace ends up being from shooting the match 7.62 nato ammo through a match .308 chamber.
Seeing how your bolt bearing recess on the right lug pocket of the receiver.....appeared normal...... and your bolt lugs actually gauged slightly larger than my trw bolt...... the 5 thou must have been gained deep in the chamber.....
let us know what gems of knowledge Gus passes on to you ;)

I love "common problems" that no one has ever heard of before. That always happened to me when I was a full time HD mechanic. I would only see the broken bikes so to me the problem was common. Then I would chat with riders here and there and no one else had ever seen it. Ever.

Keep us updated. I too want to know what is going on here.
 
I'm stilll unsure what the heck is going on but we think it may have been a case of headspace gauge being out of wack. I used a brand new Clymer reamer and a Forster gauge. Fast forward a few years and we check it with Toms gauges...something is funny. Gus said I should go and have it checked with the same gauges that I cut it with just to make sure...he's seen that before where one does not match up with the another one...weird.

But check this out. With no round in the chamber there is .005 play in the bolt. I remembered that I have some new handloads that I rolled up to try out so I took the bolt apart and left the extractor in. I first tried an Australian surplus round...same, .005 play. THEN I tried my handload and that sucker was TIGHT but it still chambered really nice. Kinda makes sense since I did chamber it for match loads :slap: If there is a bit of headspace difference I suspect that it will be harder on the brass but I plan on annealing them every couple firings to help with sizing.

Gotta talk to Gus but it seems that the Firing Line is down

Olds - I built the rifle to compete with so we cut the chamber with a Clymer .308 match to 1.630 headspace. WHERE THE HELL DID I GET 5 THOU FROM????

Is this the same rifle we cut the chamber into a brand new barrel, after we lapped a brand new TRW bolt in?
Done at the M14 clinic Hungry put on three years ago in Chilliwack?

If so, I was the guy who cut that chamber, and measured the headspace, and TOM has the same gages we used then.
So WTF??? did the .005" discrepancy come from?

the guage is a forster, not a clymer.....

OLDS.... I've order a throat erosion guage and the incremental forster headspace guage kit for match .308 AS WELL AS a clymer .308 go guage.... we will be set up nicely for future builds :D

I am still thinkin we need to stick an erosion guage in that chamber AND cast it with cerrosafe to see what's going on in there

Lots of info to be learned. One little thing that worked for me was the bit about the gas cylinder locking ring (is that the proper name? The figure 8 thing) being turned around back to front if it is not tight. That worked for me!

Did the welder guy ever show up? I would like to get my set-up unitized some time.
 
the welder guy...... hehehe got half way to the clinic and got busted by the cops for no insurance on the van :eek:
seems it expired a week previous and the office did not renew the insurance....... suffice to say.... Tony never did make it over.
One of the previous clinic attendees who's name escapes me at the moment dropped in with his assembly and a fantastic Jig he made up......
I'll be going to the shop before the weekend to do up 3 assemblies and i'll report back on how the new jig performed.

I think when i get back from my trip, I'm going to pick up a miller suitcase tig..... i need one for my Jeep build and for the clinics
 
yup..... got 1/2 a jeep (full tub n roll bars) sittin on the front lawn...... dana 44 rear end in the shed...... detroit trutrac and rear locker boxed away in the closet...... just waitin on tires.... and slip yoke eliminator as well as longer rear axle.... then it's chop/cut/rebuild :D
will have to take some time off building m14's when the jeep project starts up hehehe I can multitask but........ :D

Funny thing I saw that video last night and it was like yesterday you and i did that. That barrel I had on there was a Douglas heavy 1in10 that was in the white. I had a local "expert" parkerize it but he failed to plug the bore and he parkerized the entire barrel inside and out! :eek: I didn't notice it till I built up another rig with a SEI barrel and noticed that the chamber was polished and mine wasn't. Called up said jackass and he said thats how its suppose to be. Sorry a-hole you're wrong! Basically I sold that $700 barrel it for $100 to some guy that knew what it was and what was done to it...he didn't care. I then replaced it with a Kreiger 1in10 heavy, Skullboy and I cut the chamber, it sat in the safe for 2 years and then I sold the whole setup to some guy in Alberta.

preliminary plans for a lower island clinic are in the works for the coming months...

march date for the west coast m14 support group will be decided and announced next week. No early birds :D please hold all p.m.'s regarding clinics till I announce it...... stay tuned :rockOn:
