I've been introduced to this site from a buddy and have been addicted for a few hours now. I need some insite on firearms, ballistics......

I'm from the west coast Vancouver Island and I'm looking for a new (at least new to me) hunting rifle. Basically the only big game to hunt here are Columbia Blacktail deer (the size of a large German Sheperd). I own a 308 Savage lever action passed down from my grandpa when he died. Good gun, had alot of fun through the years. Also a 300 WSM Sako 75 stainless synthetic, awesome as many know, but it's too big for the game around here. It's either head neck or nothing to shoot at. Also it's about $80 a box for good bullets. Is there anyone who has some info and the reasoning for a good small deer weapon. Money is and it isn't an issue as long as I'll use and like it. The terrain is very mountainous, altitude is sea level to 8000 ft, lots of evergreens and not much open space. A long shot for here is 300 yds.

Used to live on VanIsle. For deer, it's hard to beat a good .30-30, I used a Marlin with a 20" tube but an 18" or 16" would have been fine too.
A lever action .357Mag or .44 would be very usable too, capable of 150-200 yard shots if you were.
I also used my Mini 14 and Mini 30 to good effect, so an SKS would be a good bet too and it'd be pretty economical.

You can also hunt Blackbears, I used a 12ga with slugs, first a Mossy 500, then a Benelli semi. Very effective.
