West German Weatherby Mark V

So what does that translate into? Is one better than the other? If so, why?

I much prefer the later ones with shorter throats and 10 twist barrels... "Better" is always an opinion however ...

The long throats required more powder to get the high velocities... and more powder was what Weatherby was all about. The new chambering still gets the high velocities but with less powder. The old factory Weatherby ammo was loaded considerably too hot for the new rifles... so there was a period of warning not to use the old factory ammo in the Japanese made rifles... some thought it was because of quality... it wasn't that at all. The Japanese made rifles are every much as good as the German made rifles...

Did these guns have ####ty barrels?

No, to the contrary; the German made (JP Sauer) barrels and Weatherby Mark V were the best made. Recently, the past 10 years, Weatherby's had a great improvement. Case in point, last year they commenced production on the Mark V duplicating the German made Weatherby. Similar to what Winchester did in 2006 with the Model 70. The model 70 is just as good as the pre 1964's and preforms with A+ results. There are a few things to consider to place value on your firearm:

Condition of the entire firearm
Barrel length (26 inch is the most preferred - 24 inch= less value)
Wood Grain - the fancier the wood grain, the more valuable

My son and I have a German Weatherby chambered for the 300 Wby. Mag. with a 1-12 twist. This firearm along with other many other German made love the 180 grain bullets.....witnessed many 1/2 inch groups, but she's a kicker. The top Weatherby in the enclosed photo is ours (26" barrel), these are only a few we own.

I’d be all over that. I’ve got one in .300 Wby that looks nearly identical. Mine has more of a burl sort of look in the stock but very close in colour. I’d have to go and check the serial # again but it is of West German manufacture circa 1962 or ‘63 if memory serves. Paid $1150 for it in 1999 or 2000. I fed it 165gr pills early in my possession but run 168gr Bergers now. It has been and remains one of my most accurate rifles. Beats the snot out of me off a bench but it’s never let me down in the field. Been considering sending it back to Weatherby to have it restored to new condition. In regards to barrel quality and I’m ashamed to say this, I owned that rifle long before I understood or applied the virtues of cleaning. For all intents and purposes, I would have thought I ruined that barrel but it shoots as good now as the day I bought it. Have had the bore scoped and it’s still A1. It’s a “never sell” item of the collection and will be passed on to one of my kids.

Right on. I'm gonna go for it, methinks. The scope on it's pretty old, so I'll probably replace it. That is, unless anyone knows how to adjust the clarity on the thing. I can't seem.tp do it from the rear and there is a ring on the front but it looks like it's for tightening the lens.

Without picture your asking lots...
But, let me hazard a guess, it might be called an adjustable objective lens.
Google that phrase....

Get yourself a reliable "getaway driver", try to act calm like you are doing him a favour, question the scope, you know the drill and when you are leaving the location resist screaming . . . Start the car . . . Start the car.

If anyone wants another Weatherby, I just saw a left hand Howa Weatherby at a gun show today. Can't remember the calibre but can find out tomorrow. I love my father's Sauer Weatherby in 7x64.
