Ok I'm thinking about picking up a western style revolver like a Ruger Vaquero in .357 or .45 any other recommendations or advice?

I have two Ruger Vaqueros in .45 LC. One has a 4 5/8" barrel and the other has a 5 1/2" barrel. I used them for a few years in Cowboy Action Shooting. I found them to be solid, accurate, trouble free revolvers. I won quite a few matches with them. I like Ruger revolvers, I also have a Single Six and a Security Six. :)

I've been shooting cowboy for the past couple of years, and both my Dad and I prefer the Beretta Stampedes with a 4 3/4" barrel in .357. They're accurate right out of the box, and they've got the half #### safety, which is more traditional, but I've shot the Vaqueros too, and they're just as nice. It really comes down to personal preference and availability.

"....357 or .45..." You reloading? .45 Colt factory ammo isn't exactly inexpensive. A .357 will let you shoot .38 Specials too.

I have a pair of Ruger Vaquero's, the old model, stainless steel, 5.5" bbls in 45 Colt. They are both excellent shooters which have never ever failed me.

It seems though that the majority of the more "competitive" shooters are going with the 357 Magnums so they can use 38 SPL loads at powderpuff velocities. Slightly cheaper to reload, slightly less recoil than even the lightest 45 Colt loads.

Ruger Vaquero in .357 or .44 Magnum is my choice

The question that you have to ask yourself is do I want to be a gamer or do I want to be historically accurate.

A new Ruger New Vaquero would be the gun of choice for me if I was only using the guns for Cowboy Action competitions either the 357 or 45 Colt will do fine.

Myself I went with 2 s/s 5.5" Ruger Bisley Vaquero's in 45 Colt I can down load to gamer 200gr @ 600fps loads or historically correct 250gr @ 900fps depending on how I feel.

HOWDY . It may also depend on what catagory you wish to be in . With 45 traditional almost all are open to you .357 traditional most are OK to use in. Adjustable sights puts you in modern or age based catagoryes .
So most often I would suggest a 357 mag with 4 5/8 or 5.5 inch barrel . Traditional fixed sights ,the newest rugers are smaller and lighter than the older ones and more ready to go . Piettas from Marstar are good and fair priced .
Colt clones are easier to find a hoster for .

Get the 4 5/8" regardless of caliber. Nothing looks as cool as the 'Gunfighter' length SA revolver, spins nicer too.
