Westley Richards 318

Mark,
that horse shoe must be getting very uncomfortable being wedged in there so hard. Do you have to take wide strides?
Two of the coolest calibers to come from the other side of the pond. Take good care of them.
If interested I will trade you my Grand Am for that rifle.

Looks like a good buy, ....commercial action. I have one and just make the brass from 30-06. Mine's a takedown, bolt peep and claw-mounted scope. Also have a couple of moulds and lots of the old Barnes bullets, plus a lot of Woodleighs. Will handle anything in North America with little recoil. Every bit as good a caliber and the new fangled stuff.

Hello again Gents, Here is a bit of an update.

Call me cheap or impatient but I am not prepared to order current Kynoch ammo @ $15 a round plus tax, duty, shiping etc. I should be able to reload for about $3 a round (I hope).

Noel, I'm not feeling overly lucky, I busted up my leg in september & have been on the couch, surfing the internet since then, didn't get one hour of hunting in all fall:mad:

I have located some ammo while I await my dies & bullets, the gun is a dream to shoot, surprisingly light recoil for a 250 grain bullet at 2400fps.

I'm currently walking with the aid of crutches (or cane on a good day) so couldn't make it down range to set targets, I was only able to bang the gongs, but it was no problem hitting the little one (10" ?) at 100yrds consistenly with the express sights:D

I have also recently received the letter of authenticity & a copy of the actual ledger entry from Westley Richards. The gun remains configured as it was originally, it is built on a "Mauser 98 - FN action", the gun was built for stock in the London store in 1954.

Greetings,
You are going in the right direction with your loads. 30/06 fire formed to .330 is correct. .330 bullets. You could probably get away with neck sizing only in 318 W.R. dies and not go the accellerated express route. I think that your scope bases are early Parker Hale style. They (P.H.)were originally made without the integral recoil lug built into the inside of the base, thus the recoil lug on the front base of your rifle. Many companies make rings which should fit the bases on your W.R. I think Warne makes a set with the lever type releases that should look right.

Fred, thanks for the input on the scope mounts! What is the difference between 318 WR & "the accelerated express"?

Anyone have any suggestions for a scope? I don't know how comfy I'd be gambleing on a vintage piece..

I have seen this rifle listed for sale recently, I have a few questions about it, but being a new member I cannot send direct messages I guess. If you are still on here could you send me a message perhaps?
Thanks
Mitch
Hello Gents,

A quick update, I have located dies and projectiles at reasonable prices. Brass is another story, I will attempt to resize 30-06 or 338-06 as suggested.

I have attached additional photos of the action in hopes someone may have some idea of the manufacture.

The front site is not adjustable, it has a flipdown "hood" for when glare is/is not an issue and a flip up "moon sight" made of warthog ivory for night (or deep dusk) shooting.

I look forward to your input.
