What’s the difference between a 92 and 94?

I never really paid much attention until recently but what’s the big difference between a Winchester 92 and a 94? I thought the 92 were pistol cals while the 94 were rifle but then I saw the 94ae in 357 and 44. Or is it just the difference in production years? Who’s familiar with the history?

Different frame sizes, 92 is a small version of the 1886 action, 94 is a larger "improved" version. - dan

Not likely a real Winchester 92.I meant selling a pre64 94 then adding the proceeds to the grand.
I'm developing some 92 44-40 loads in cast and with 200gr Hornady XTP and yes I have a .4286 groove. 22gr of IMR 4227 cut 2 1/8" at 100 yards with the Speer 200gr Gold Dots. Cast I'm trying some 220gr/.430 diameter as .429 was nothing to write home about with 8-10gr of Unique.Holds 13 rounds .......lots of fun maybe a spring bear and definitely a fall deer.

Not until the 50s did Winchester play with pistol cartridges in the 94. Completely different set of guts in the short case action 94. I have an original pre 64 94 in 44-40, supposedly extremely rare.

I'd say! That bugger be much more rare than the model 92's in 45 ACP made for the Argentinian Police.

I am completely making an uninformed assumption here, but I believe the 92 has an inherently smoother action due to design? I'm basing this on the fact that every 92 I've cycled seemed smoother than 94's, is this accurate?

Depends on how they be tuned. The model 94 Legacy 357 mag I used for cowboy action shooting back in the day was flawless in action & rather accurate. I shoulda' kept that one.

A gun shouldn't need tuned unless timed matches are on the menu .The real Winchester 92's I've handled are slicker than the 94's both smoothed from years of use.Imports and recent 92 copies usually need to be worked on.
