What’s the value of an early ‘70s Marlin 444? EDIT: It's mine, now there's some pics.

Not sure on exact condition but assume it’s used and average. I have an opportunity to take a 444 on trade. How much are they worth? I’m clueless when it comes to lever actions.

I ended up trading for it because it's kind of cool. The S/N starts with 71 so I think it was made in 1971 based on google. The front sight was unfortunately ground down and the scope on it is a 3-9 bushnell without any other markings that has been "modified" on the front bell to clear the original rear sight. Scope is worth nothing IMO. The scope mount is interesting as it has a flip up rear peep sight. Also looks to have the original recoil pad that isn't totally rock hard either from age. I will get out soon to shoot it but any info you guys can provide on this older cool rifle would be great.

I'm pretty well inclined to agree with Jay, no pictures, no idea if there are optics or dies, brass, bullets or anything else that may increase its appeal. It could easily enough be up to 850 maybe even more.
Sight unseen and being told to assume it is in average condition makes it very hard to give a definite answer.
 
I do have a couple pics and it looks to be in good shape for an almost 50 year old used gun but I don't want to post pics of someone else's gun. There is a scope but it looks kind of cheap. I was thinking a similar ballpark price. Thanks for your help!

As long as the barrel isn't pooched and seeing as how a new one is around $750,my bet is you have a $400 gun.

Spot on! And my Marlin 1895 in 45-70 is a good example. Purchase price of $350, added a Bushnell 2-7x32 $200, added rings $40, repaired one hole in the receiver @ Gunco to mount the rail $20... All in for $610 on a used gun. Then ammo...

About 1970 I picked up, ;) and still have, a Marlin 444S. I've mounted an old Bushnell 1-4 variable on it using the Weaver pivot mount. That was my choice when I accompanied Dad on his :( last Moose hunt in the B.C. interior in 1971. Then and since, especially when using reloads with the 265gr Hornady :d, it has proven to be a dependable and deadly bit of 'medicine' for use on Mr. Moose. A number of years back, I lent it to a friend that I took on his 1st Moose hunt and since then, it usually comes along as a spare rifle. It doesn't get used much as a 'primary' these days but it's still a keeper :).

No fuggly wart awn the side of the receiver that goes clear thru.
Chuck the Bushynill and put on a Leupold 20mm objective scope.
Even a 2x7x28 should clear the rear sight.

There is a VarX III in the EE for maybe an offer on the price listed.

I would, gladly, but since the fairly recent photobucket :rolleyes: 'screw up, I have yet to make alternative arrangements for posting photos. What I ended up doing is sending said photos to Kamlooky by e-mail. Didn't mean to hijack your thread. Sorry about that.
