There is zero chance I would ever put see thru mounts on a rifle.all my iron sighted rifles have detachable rings which I've yet to need anyway. See thru's are an ugly way of trying to have your cake and eat it too.
I really could care less what you or anyone else think of their appearance, I've used them on the old 88 for longer than most here have been alive without issue. The fact that I can use a receiver sight under it is perfect for me, as my old eyes can see that much better than the standard notch and post, and that sight is far more accurate.
I've also used the old Lyman tip off mount. It was acceptable for close range shooting, but I found at longer ranges it would open the group size. It also blocked the back sight with it's thick base, making the whole thing a mute point. Also heavy and blocky.
Heavier kicking rifles will always wear solidly mounted rings.
