What 22lr do you like for hunting?

Modular 10/22 takedown, 16.1" bbl., heavy barrel.
Bushnell legend scope (good enough for a 22lr) 2-7x33 on top.
Glass is crystal clear.
The 10 shot group at 25 yds is 'one ragged hole'.
Pretty good for a semi and a takedown.
I can shoot my 10 shot group and eat a sandwich while my buddy paw laboriously armstrongs 10 shots down range with his bolt savage in 22lr.
Our groups are about the same.
You have to be careful adjusting the ring that controls the snugness of the barrel to receiver fit on the 10/22 takedowns or you get crappy accuracy.

Bombing around on me quad, I yewse a somewhat beat up Winchester 69A I got Kerlie
to groove the receiver awn.
Tawptited with a Weaver Classic 4X.
Deadly awn growse.
It's gartzs 'nuff charm I'm nawt too x'cited when she gits awl dusty, derty and wet.
Sounds ###y...........huh?
She izz..............................

CZ every CZ I have owned enjoyed American eagle hollow point ammo.
The Sako FinFire enjoyed the same diet as well.
I shot gophers with them and never had a complaint.
Never bought bulk federal packs and have not shot 500 rounds of rimfire in a season the last couple years.
My ammo stash is still healthy of the hollow point variety.
Looky, your .22 sounds ###ier than a pig with lipstick Sir!
Tight Groups,
Rob

For grouse, I like to use CCI 22 short subsonic if I can get in close.

Gophers used to be all american eagle hollow points but now I stash includes many different varieties. My last gopher outing 2 of us ran through 2200 rounds including a Remington bucket of bullets, which when prices were cheaper I wasn't a big fan of it but it seemed to run good through the 597, dirty but ran good.

My go to hunting ammo for my Marlin xt22 is Federal AE 40g hp, CCI hp or round nose minimags or the bulk Federal target match. I find the Fed AE and Target match to be interchangeable as far as scope zero for me, they shoot the same for me.

Non hunting the only thing I stay away from is one of the HV Winchester ammos, I get lots of fte with it although the rifle shoots it nicely. Wildcats are another one it likes and shoot well.

CCI standard velocity hollow pointed with a Neil waltz die. for squirrel head shots and a good 6x24 scope for magnifying those tiny heads if able to set up agains a good rest.

CCI Quiet Segmented.

Expensive at ~ $10 for 50 from Cad Tire but the have the exact same ballistics as the normal CCI Quiets and lot more damage when they hit.

Overall I'm a huge fan of the CCI Quiet range of cartridges. I dont have to wear ear protection and, even though it's 100% legal to shoot where I do, I have got neighbours and it's good not to disturb them. I try to makes sure that if I'm 150 meters from the house I cant be heard from inside. The CCI Quiet ammo does this really well.

We tried the CCI Quiets through my buddy's Savage Mark II (the same gun you will be using I think?) - it's got a decently long barrel and there is a marked difference in volume between it and the Henry I shoot. They really are astonishingly stealthy, to the point where I wonder if I could get follow on shots if I were unlucky enough to miss.

The Quiet Segmented's are just fine for the sort of thing you are talking about hunting out to 75 yards

My gun is chambered to also allow for 22 Shorts and I tried the CCI Short CB's for plinking. They're not bad, fly about the same as the CCI Quiets but make even less noise. Only put out the same muzzle power as a high powered airgun though - so you're basically limited to very small or fragile game at short ranges - think what you would be happy killing with an airgun at 20 yards.

I did try the CCI Mini-Mags - they are awesome. But the trajectory is off if you've sighted in for / got used to the low velocity ammo and they are hellova loud! BANGGG!!!

We have shot thousands of grouse and hares with pneumatic pellet rifles and pistols using 14.3 grain (round nose) Beeman Kodiak and Crosman Premier pellets... they have a whopping 13.5 ft/lb's of energy... in .22 LR, the bullet does not matter, accuracy does... always aim for the head and always use what is most accurate in your rifle. For us that is usually CCI SV, SK St.+ or Mini-Mag solids.

Used to use the 555s but found cheapo wildcats to kill better.

Another option I can't touch. The 333 (I think its the same ammo as the 555 boxes too?) and wildcat both FTE, and often won't even eject with a second cycle of the bolt/trigger. Have to get out the cleaning rod for those suckers.

My cheapie 10/22 hardwood carbine loves the Winchester Dyna-Point ammo. It actually surprised me how well it shoots for a semi that I was told "you can't hit a damned thing with one of those guns" by a guy at a gun shop.

I'm not after the most accurate possible ammo or anything. I'm just wondering what sort of brands, weights and speeds people like to shoot. I need to buy some more ammo for my 22 soon, so I figured might as well see what other people like to use and see if anything listed calls to me, so to speak.

I think you actually ARE after the most accurate ammo possible. Bullet weight, type, speed all matter allot less if bullet placement isn't what it should be. Sorting that out is the first item of business after every new 22 rifle purchase. At least for me. Accuracy varies wildly. What one rifle loves, another won't shoot well at all. If you stick with the CCI line of goodies, chances are you'll find something that your rifle shoots very accurately, but don't hesitate to try some others. SK is very good, but I have one rifle that loves Federal Gold Medal target too. In almost 30 years of shooting ALLOT of 22 ammo...I'm of the firm belief that the best accuracy is to be found in subsonic offerings. High velocity~my CZ loves CCI Blazer for some reason, and that feels like a bit of a lottery win being such a cheap ammo. Every other 22 I now own far prefers slower ammo in the 1050 fps +/- range. For the record~the only "game" I shoot with a 22 are pigeons, crows (if/when possible) and gophers. CCI Blazer run through a Neil Waltz die to add a gaping hollow point=instant demise for something the size of a gopher. Were I shooting something I wanted to eat, I'd suggest head-shots only if you're wanting to use fast hollow points.

^great advice, and I spend allot of time with my N.W. Die. If you'd care to learn a little about the process; http://www.portercalls.com/neal_waltz_die.htm

^my sentiment exactly

I've been using CCI Quiet-22 a lot, it shoots very well out of my Savage MK2, has plenty of energy for headshots on small game (grouse, squirrels and bunnies), and it's very quiet. The longest shot I've made with it was a 27 yard headshot on a squirrel, bang flop yum.

I prefer anything but Remington thunderduds in all three of my .22's. It doesn't cycle the semis reliably, dirty, noticeable variation in loads. CCI, Federal Champion, Win. 333/555 all see common use. Accuracy is in that order, the only exception being my revolver that prefers the Win. 333/555.
