What 30-06 on a budget?

the 4200 3-9x40 bushnell elite is on sale now for 189$ after rebate. That leaves you with a 400$ for a rifle of your choice. I personnaly wouldn't steep any cheaper on a scope, but that's just me.

Back during the ole college days I ended up in the shop of a gunsmith - and told him I needed a rifle for moose. He suggested a 30-06, 7MM-RM, or a 300 WM. He mentioned that some consider a 308 light but he said - it"ll do. I decided on the 30-06 and he also convinced me to buy a Sako AV. I did and found it's accuracy to be quite good and I still use it today.

My suggestion is spend more and get a rifle that lasts a lifetime. Don't cheap out on the one thing that needs to be reliable and will contribute to putting meat in the freezer every year.
 
I'll put in another vote for a weatherby vanguard. I liked my 30-06 enough that when wholesale sports had the s1 vanguards on sale cheap, I bought another in .243. For something a bit different and used, a Winchester 88 would be a good choice, but it would be in .308, not 30-06. Some day I'll have one of them too, they seem to go around the $600 mark for a decent one.

Another vote for the venerable Parker Hale in either the Safari or Safari De Luxe. These are fine accurate rifles. Also, the Ruger M77 Mark II is a very nice rifle too. Both are control round feed Mauser 98 designs. Prices are very good for these used rifles.
 
Dont buy a package, build your own and dont pay a lot more for a lot better rig.... Here i mounted a rifle for one of my grandaugher first big game rifle... Total cost, south of 800.00 and this will last a lifetime with very good accuraccy...

Weaver bases...
Weaver rings...
One hard case ...
One trigger lock....

Bought an Axis package in .308 for my son-in-law to replace his Axis truck gun as it was rusting badly.

Tried it at the range and it shot very well for the price. I was not happy with it, the stock feels like JELLO
so I did the unthinkable......I bought a Boyd's stock for it.
Back to the range, it still shoots the same tight "hunting" groups, not happy with it, scope is not up to par.

AGAIN, I did the unthinkable and replaced the scope with a far superior one.
Back to the range, it still shoots the same nice groups, but now I'm not happy with the loose feeling bolt, now I have spent enough money to buy two new Axis, or one good rifle.

Do yourself a favor, stay away from Axis, yes, they shoot, but you can put as much lipstick on a pig as you want.
