What .308 round can I use for moose that isn't $45 a box (the price I got quoted on Silvertips, locally)? I don't mind paying $45 a box if I was only going to buy one or two boxes, but I have to sight the scope in first - and that could chew up a few boxes. I don't have an endless ammo budget, even though moose hunting is a once or twice in a lifetime opportunity.

$45 is a rip off price for silvertip ammo You should be able to find it around $30.
That's the result of a quick web price check at wholesale sports.

I suspect that it's the premium winchester ammo (only asked over the phone) and they DID say they could do a better price if I bought a few boxes - but yeah, it's a lot of dough.

In the Canadian Tire store I think you will find Remington Core Loct, not the premium, just the "ordinary," among the lowest priced of any ammunition. Get 180 grain and it will be perfectly suitable for moose.
Like someone said, bore sight it. Take the bolt out and get the rifle rested so it is pointing at the 100 yard range. Line the barrel up on something, then adjust ths scope to what the rifle is pointed at.
Then put up a target at 25 yards and very carefully, fire one shot at it's centre. Adjust the scope, so the rifle hits right on, or maybe ½ inch low, at 25 yards.
Check it at 100, with the object of of having it hit about 2 to 3 inches high at 100.
Go and get some moose meat. As they always say, one in the ribs is all you need. True, but most of us can't wait the 30 to 45 seconds it takes for him to fall over, so we put another one in the ribs. Or, the second may go to the head, if a it is in the clear.

the 180 gr power point and silver tip are ballisticly similar, get 1-2 boxes of power point and get your rifle with in a few inches of dead on and then take out the supreme or supreme elite or what have you, both are good bullets anyways i have taken a few moose with power points out of my 300wsm but last year i took a bull at 400 yards with the ballistics silver tip and it dropped one shot no problem.

The cheapest 180 grain they have behind the counter has always worked for me. But then I never try shots greater than 200 yards or so, but honestly I doubt it would make a difference if I did. It's not like I'm trying for head shots. It's a moose, it has a big kill zone. Just my two sense.

Make sure you're asking for SUPER-X Silvertips. They should be around $20/box

Seriously? With all the other costs of hunting, you are concerned with maybe having to spend an extra $45 to kill several hundred pounds of meat (if it takes more than one box you really are doing it wrong)? Sight the rifle in with the ammo you intend to use.

Well then, why don't you buy them for me?

I was talking about buying a lot mroe than one extra box.

Go with the 180gr core lokt by remington. I use the for everything and I dont' mind bying premium but these seem to kill them just as dead. I find the silver tips break apart to easy.
Lebaron has core lokt for 16 or 17 bucks a box.

Hey, an Aussie fellow an his Mrs went to Canada to hunt a variety of species INCL moose, she shot a 43 inch bull with a 243, the guide was more happy for her to use the 243 than a bigger cal as she was confident... therefore IMO a 308 with Remington corelokt would give you moose down, of course shot placement is the name of the game.

good luck.

ps- few boxes to sight in a rifle??? maybe half a box but even so then you have 1.5 boxes (30-35) shots left to kill a moose... im sure you can do it.
