what is the best 375 lead to use for 0-500 yard....i have some barnes 235 grains would i better off with 260 .270 grain shooting 375 ruger....thanks

Nosler Accubonds 260gr/300gr & Sierra Gamekings 300gr if I remember correctly they are all around .473 - .475 BC...

I load and shoot the 260gr Accubonds & 300gr Gamekings out to 500 yards in my 375RUM they are amazingly accurate resulting in many 6" or better 3 shot groups at that distance...

Mind you I have never fired a .375 cal anything that is not amazingly accurate...

Go with the 260gr Accubonds will work better in that little 375 Ruger case they won't take up as much powder space...

:)

BC, at under 500 yards won't really mean anything. Shoot the bullet that you and your rifle like the best. Also at those distances, heavier may not be better. I like the 260 Accubonds, but depending on what you are shooting them at, the lighter bullets would prove more than effective.

I checked my ballistic calculator for you.

260gr Accubond 200 yard zero 2850fps muzzle velocity =

300 yards - 2345fps - 3050 FPE = 9" drop
400 yards - 2175fps - 2620 FPE = 20.5" drop
500 yards - 2010fps - 2240 FPE = 41.5" drop

300gr Accubond 200 yard zero 2700fps muzzle velocity =

300 yards - 2345fps - 3160 FPE = 8.5" drop
400 yards - 2100fps - 2700 FPE = 24" drop
500 yards - 2020fps - 2300 FPE = 48" drop

Looks like there is a slight give and take with both bullts.

260gr = slightly flatter trajectory
300gr = slightly higher retained energy

Myself I would go with the flatter trajectory but to each his own...

:D

Yeah, I think the 260 is a better option. I was surprised at how little BC was gianed by the 300 gr bullet, but I guess 40gr doen't matter much with a .375...:)

I don't know, but I expect a 250 gr TTSX will be similar to the 260 gr AB. The AB is a great bullet if you want your .375 to stretch its legs a bit. After shooting both TSXs and ABs, my pal with the Alaskan has decided the AB is his bullet of choice. Thats fine with me, as it makes it easier to keep his bullets separated from mine on the loading bench.

That BC is not bad but not good enough for me to switch over from my 260gr Accubonds if Barnes could have gotten the BC's up I would have definitely been looking at it I'm thinking I could push a 250gr to 3100fps.

:D

Barnes 0.375, 250 Grain TTSX BT
S.D. = 0.254
B.C. = 0.424

Using that number compared to the 260 NAB from my 20" NEW KING, and only a 50fps increase in velocity (which is easily attainable) the 2 bullets have virtually identical trajectories to 500 yards and stays above the 1800fps needed for TSX expansion to 500 yards.

A bullet that will perform up close like a 300gr NAB or Nosler Partition, and long range liek a 260gr NAB...Once more Barnes has hit the nail squarely on the head!;)

I'll have to see it before I will believe it and I agree it would be a fantastic all round bullet if it does what it is supposed to.

I'd save the 260gr Accubonds for my T/C Contender carbine in 375JDJ which is the only bullet I have found that will give me 1800fps past 300 yards in this little rifle/cartridge combo.

Do you fellows have any experience on how the 260gr AB stands up at higher velocties?

I saw some pics of a couple that had been shot into a moose at .375 Chattfield-Taylor velocites and they were quite deformed; not destroyed, but definitely mushroomed out the the maximum I would ever want to see.

It was enough to steer me clear of them for my 375 RUM at the time, but maybe you guys have had different experriences?

As for the OP, don't overlook the classic 300gr Gameking. Here's the skinny on them in terms of BC (from Sierra's site). I like Sierra because they list BC for different velocites, not just the best case scenario to make their bullets look better.

.475 @ 2600 fps and above
.480 between 2600 and 2200 fps
.470 between 2200 and 1800 fps
.458 @ 1800 fps and below
