What 45-70 Govt variant is this cartridge

I got this today with a bunch of other cartridges. It’s stamped 45-70 Govt but it’s obviously not. It’s been necked down to 0.400in.

I know there are 40-60 and 40-65 variants of the 45-70 but they are tapered, not necked. Anyone seen this before?

Yep. Actually 0.408

I actually have a .43 Mauser cartridge and it is similar but much shorter.

There was a gunsmith at C. Sharps ( Dan Pharsis ) that developed a bottleneck 40-70 based on the 45-70. Looks just like that. From what I understand it was quite popular in the 1990's. The .40-65 has pretty much made it dissapear from competition though.

I think this fits best. It says the bullet dia is 0.406” and this one measures 0.408”

40-70 Sharps. There are 2 variants, straight and necked. Yours is "necked."
