I'd use what I already have:

Win 70 fwt in 6.5x55mm Swede or Rem 700 in .264 Win Mag.

It's doubtful that I will ever hunt moose. Down here in the deep south black bears are making a comeback so that is a possibility, although unlikely. I have been playing with the 6.5 Grendel for a number of years now, having built 3 AR 15 variants and like it for the mild recoil and excellent accuracy. I really have not played with any bullets heavier than the 123 gr and those are probably a bit on the light side. Heavier, think longer bullets reduce case capacity and in turn less velocity. I also have a nice little CZ 527 in that caliber. If I could get a bullet in the 130-140 gr weight range build tough enough and keep the range short enough to have better terminal velocity I would try it.

Hands down, I would go with the 6.5x55, it's been there and done all that for about 125 years. I say that because that is the only other 6.5 I have, all Swedish M96's . Not enough difference in it and the .260 Rem (6.5-08) and 6.5 Creedmore to talk about.

Of course the 264. With the super slow powders now it is now back to the great cartridge it once was. 140 at 3200+ is the ticket.

I have hunted moose with the 6.5x55, with the 140 X bullet (favourite load of the Remington 700 Classic I had at the time), but have carried other rifles for black bear, because I like a larger, heavier bullet in a shorter, handier rifle for bears (not that the Swede cannot kill a blackie). I'm on my 4th 6.5x55 rifle...finally getting a left handed Sako! First 3 shots out of this rifle went into 3/8" at 100 yards!
Have more trigger time with the 6.5x55 than any other centerfire cartridge; love it!
Only animal taken with my left handed Browning X Bolt in 6.5 Creedmoor has been a bull moose. Did not find the 143 ELD-X bullet inside that moose, but then again, the shot was only 20 yards!
Looking hard at the 6.5 PRC right now...may rebarrel my 300WSM...or I just happen to have a LH Montana 1999 action that I can use for this!

I took a black bear with 6.5x55 and 140 Speer Hotcore, never moved, dead before it hit the ground.
Seen enough moose dropped the same way with a 243, moose are not that tough to kill, any 6.5 would work fine on them.

Looking forward to trying it here soon, with a Remington 700 Classic in 6.5x55 as well.

Do already have one deer kill with a 6.5x55, but that was a Zastava rifle. The 120 grain Nosler Ballistic Tip is a destructive lil bugger but he didn't go far.

Debating right now between Nosler 140 grain Partitions or twice as many Hornady 140 grain Interlocks for cheaper.

Range time with the Interlocks, and then rezero and hunt with the Partitions.

Think I will take you up on that suggestion!

I've never shot anything with either, the toughness of the Nosler will be decisive on the bigger animals?

I've shot dozens of big game animals with Partitions and they have performed flawlessly... my bear clients often used Partitions and I was always pleased to see that.

Sold. Partitions it will be for the big critters.

By the way I was kicking myself for not at least pitching an offer on a Ruger 77 in 6.5x55 you were selling a while back. I think it was you anyway? Happy the Remington came along when it did.

Thanks for the perspective on ammo choice.
