What 7mm Cartridge

I shot a 284 win for several years, built on a long action with winchester and Lapua brass and Lapua 180 Scenars over H4831SC. Very nice and easy to load for, easy to shoot, sub 1/2 MOA and between 9 to 10 mils to a grand depending on the day. I would not build one on a short action, you would be handicapped for sure.
 
I have been playing at 1000m for a while with the 7mm Rem Mag, 3000fps with the 162gr ELDM which has decent enough BC for 1000m+, shoots fine, single diget es with H4831, belts don't affect anything in precision, with a decent brake it's like shooting a 223, you can see trails/hits no problem.
Not saying I'm going to win any competition, I don't shoot competitive, but the performance is impressive, groups are really good shooting slowly, I don't see any reason to switch anything up at this point.
 
For 1000 yards I'd probably keep it simple and get a 9-twist or faster Tikka pre-fit in .284 Win. Build it off a .270 and just run the same mags/bolt stop. Should have plenty of room for 175+ bullets.

What I *actually* did though was go .280 AI in an 8-twist barrel, but that was a factory rifle so no build required. A little more steam on the "big end" but that's about it. It's a 26" X-Bolt with the Recoil Hawg brake so it's kind of an artillery piece size-wise.
 
I have never used a 7mm for long range. My experience at 1000 metres and beyond has only been with the 6mm, 260, and 308.

I have considered a 7-08AI or a 7WSM, on a long or long-magnum action, to allow seating of long, high BC, bullets, as far out as possible.
 
4831sc and the nosler partition 160gr , combined with my rugger m77 mk II is a lethal combination for anything I set my sights on.
Targets I have shot to 1000M with the 160 and 175gr accubonds with results that really surprised me.
An actual kill on an animal? I took a respectable mule deer buck this year at 295 yards measured with my leupold rangefinder. Clean shot to the spine in the neck right above the shoulder and lights out.
My previous "long range shot" was with a semi auto .308 and the same bullet (in 30 cal obviously) loaded with varget. The results were the same with the .30 cal 160gr (165?) and lights out again at 275yards measured on a decent bushnell rangefinder before the deer started to move. I took that deer by leading a foot ahead of him on my scope on 4 power just as he started to go from a curious bounce to a mulie run. Nicked the leg but nailed the lungs and arteries.

Don't often feel the need to shoot much past 100 yards but I have absolute faith in the 7mm Rem mag with the right bullet at the right speed. Like I said above, 4831sc , WLMR primer, Nosler 160gr bullet...... magical combination.

Been pondering a 7mm-08 , will get one eventually. Probably go with the same bullet.

if I were take a serious stab at long range precision I would absolutely bring my "hunting rifle" with the accubonds instead of the partitions
